I am truly in love with May McGoldrick novels right now. I have read 8 in the last three months starting with the Angel of Skye in the MacPherson Clan Series. Each novel is a stand alone but I think it would be helpful to read them in order because so many of her characters are woven into other stories in the series. I get so caught up in the stories that I think about the characters even when I have to put the book down. They have made me laugh and cry. Truly the mark of a great book. The only thing I would mention in this book is there are a number of sexual scenes and not only between the hero and heroine which was different from her other books.

Had to keep reading about the people I was introduced in the McPherson Trilogy. This book was just as good as the first 3, if not better! The relationship of Jaimie & Malcolm was so sweet when they were kids, but got really good when they grew up. The suspense in this book was thrilling and made for a real page turner!! Such excitement! Definitely would recommend reading this novel, in order! You won't regret it!!

I just can’t get enough of this duo’s writing...and their imagination thrills us. This may be the best one yet...but it would be a close race. Not overly proseful as some writers subject us to in order to add pages. But exciting plots that just do not quit. My hubby is quite forgiving of my passion for these characters. Yes...there is some tasteful description of perfectly appropriate lovemaking between partners that are committed to one another. And being a Christian I am satisfied that it is not prurient but only a fact of life. Thank you for hitting the perfect mix.

History is well and good, which should be studied in school but for me 12 years of school was enough as I am into a book for romance. It was a lot of romance the fight that this couple had to overcome was enormous. The book had the couple fighting tooth and nail and also had a lot of angst. Such evil villains that seemed to never die as the villains were almost superhuman in capability! Still such a good tale to read!

I absolutely loved this book. I have only read one book by May McGoldrick before this one , Angel of Skye and I remember that it was a great story too. This book had everything to make it an exiting reading. Suspense, Intrigue and a great love story between Malcolm and Jamie and a wonderful happy ending which makes it an absolute must read. I have already ordered the Macpherson Trilogy and can't wait to get started on it.

This story certainly kept me guessing although I was quite sure there would be a happy ending. The richly described scenes bring you right into the story like the proverbial fly on the wall. There were a few scenes where I almost felt I should look away, if you catch my drift. Well done. The heroes are true heroes and the. Villains are true villains. This would make a colorful movie.

This was the last May McGoldrick book I've read out of eight but there will be another one and another one to read after I read the next one. The Intended tells the story of Jamie MacPearson and Malcolm MasLeod who in past books were children growing up. Jamie declared she would marry Malcolm but he marries another. The plot thickens with Catherine Howard's entrance into the plot. What an awful woman who is to marry an awful man, Henry the Eighth who will hopefully never know he is Jamie's father and who chopped off the head of Jamie's aunt, Anne Boelyn. Enjoy this book and read the previous books to this one. At the end of each book the authors give a chronology of their books to help you keep up with all their heroes and heroines.

Once you start reading the story it begins to take turns & twists you don't expect. Then when you believe you are almost done with the story, it takes another surprising turn! Wonderfully written.

As a devotee of all well written historical biographies of FDR and Churchill, "Citizens of London," by Lynne Olson, lets us share the stories of, "the Americans who stood with Britain in its darkest, finest hour." Although familiar with Averill Harriman from my many sorties into the murky, war-torn, political world of FDR and Churchill, Edward R. Murrow and Gil Winant were peripheral characters in my library.Murrow, of course, was the CBS radio reporter wunderkind whose "This is London... " signature brought World War II into the homes of Americans on a regular basis, opening their minds and hearts to the plight of Great Britain and the danger of German aggression. His reports from the rooftops of London helped to pave the way for a lifting of isolationism as FDR cautiously prodded America to enter the fray.John Gilbert Winant, Olson tells us, was a natural leader and the American ambassador who soothed British spirits and soul following former Ambassador Joe Kennedy's brash, appeasement-centered, diplomatic relations. And Averill Harriman, a rich businessman anxious to play power games at a global level, lived large romantically as he cut a wide social swath across London. When you have a few hours to yourself, pick up this paperback and settle in. I promise you a fascinating read and a thoughtful study of the men who helped lay the foundation for the FDR/Churchill special relationship. They deserve more attention than other authors have given them.

Lynne Olson, author of “Citizens of London,” is a bestselling writer of historical nonfiction, aimed mainly at Britain’s critical role in World War II. Her studies are immaculate in both research and writing skills. Her ability to take a reader through complexity and intense human impact without the aridity usually associated with historical commentary is amazing. In this book three well-to-do Americans wind up in Winston Churchill’s coterie as advisors and watchdogs over the activities between the US and Britain as the war escalates. They eventually end up very sympathetic to the plight of the Britishers and less than approving of the opposition from FDR and reluctant US citizens to getting America involved. The hardy and determined British citizens suffered greatly as the United States refused to come to their assistance in battling the German forces that threatened to obliterate their nation and the misery was exacerbated by this obstinacy.John Winant was the idealistic US ambassador to Britain, Averell Harriman ran FDR’s Lend-Lease program in London, and Edward R. Murrow was head of CBS news in Europe. They all developed such close ties with Churchill that they were actually considered part of his official circles. More than that, all three became romantically involved with Churchill’s daughters. The author handles this touchy situation with aplomb, sparing the reader any salacious details that would detract from her scholarly approach. Each of the three had serious personality traits that they were able to muffle as they assisted Churchill with his decisions. All three were immensely wealthy and/or influential, they were idealistic, and their interest in the British situation was genuine. Winant was extremely shy and a poor speaker, but his boyish charm and unquestionable loyalty made him a favorite with the British people. Harriman, an industrial scion, was intensely self-centered and tended towards covert attempts to ingratiate himself with Churchill. He was refereed to as a “bum-sucker” in the book. Murrow was outspoken and given to critical comments about the US in his broadcasts and writings, something greatly appreciated by Churchill in his never ending attempts to get America involved in the war. When America entered the war after Pearl Harbor, all three, along with Churchill and the rest of the country, were giddy with the decision. The intricate dance of collaboration performed by all the principals throughout the war, and the successful conclusion, is wonderfully chronicled in this intriguing book.Schuyler T WallaceAuthor of TIN LIZARD TALES

Lynne Olson writes beautifully and her research is wonderful, but the most interesting part of this book to me was not the three Americans living in London during the war years about whom she titles her book. I tired a bit of reading about their various dalliances. The most interesting part of the book, from my point of view, was the relationship between Roosevelt and Churchill and the many important things about which they did not agree. Also, very interesting was her description of the relationship between the English people and the American soldiers stationed in England during the war years. Much of this was new to me even though the events took place many years ago. One can easily see how Olson's research for this book led her to write "Last Hope Island" which is a "must-read" for history buffs of World War II.

In reading about America's history, and recently reading several other books that deal with this time frame, I find Olson's work to be accurate beyond subjectivism and insightful as it relates to the politics of leadership and conflict. FDR was not my favorite President. America's behavior, but mostly in hindsight, leading up to WWII as she related to other free nations under attack was less than appealing and this book will give the reader some insight which may influence their current outlook. I don't judge the United States behavior "back then" with our current attitudes and perspectives (for instance, the internment of Japanese Americans; which we have tried to repay but in fairness to our past generation may well have seemed the very best solution to the extreme hate directed at those innocents) but do take notice of ideological motivations and self-serving behaviors and wonder how we might be the same today? A good book filled with both historical and personal facts and findings that flesh out a period in the US's and Britain's history that is now lost to our progeny.

Review

“At its essence, this is a book about the value of reading--to escape, to learn, to be sustained and to grow.” ―The New York Times Book Review“The simple, direct narrative will grab readers with the eloquent account of daily trauma and hope.” ―Booklist, Starred Review“Li effectively builds the climate of fear that accompanies the rise of the Red Guard... Sketches about her grandparents root the narrative within a broader context of Chinese traditions as well as her own family's values, establishing a basis for Li's later portrayal of the individuals around her who respond to oppression with hope and faith in knowledge and education.” ―Starred, Publishers Weekly“Beautifully written...offers a somewhat broader view of a nation in turmoil and illustrates the grit and determination necessary for survival in a dysfunctional society.” ―School Library Journal“The narrative will enable readers to sympathize with Li and feel relief when she leaves to study at Swarthmore College after ten years of education in China.” ―Kirkus Reviews“Snow Falling in Spring joins other important books about the Cultural Revolution . . . as childhood testimonies to national trauma, cautionary tales for our own time, and appreciations for homes, old and new.” ―San Francisco Chronicle

A beautifully written account the the events experienced by a young girl during China's cultural revolution, a sad and dangerous time in the country's development. I thought this book would be a good one for a social studies class on China, perhaps to follow The Good Earth Makes the reader appreciate books, knowledge, truth and freedom wherever they may be found.

A really good story about a girl growing up in Communist China. Story line was slow in place but overall not bad.

This was a really good book, and very interesting if you're interested in books about China under the Communist Party.

Great addition to my Chinese Revolution collection in my classroom!

Interesting book--I enjoyed !

Exactly what I was looking for

There is nothing wrong with this book, but I'm only giving it 3 stars because I have read other memoirs about the cultural revolution that offered a clearer look. Wild Swans is one of those books. Snow Falling in Spring is a good book for someone who doesn't have time to spend on another book like Wild Swans (500+ pages). It also isn't as explicit about the hardships and pain that people endured.

interesting book
