Myths and Mistakes in New Testament Textual Criticism, by Elijah Hixson Peter J. Gurry

Review

"The authors in this book offer a necessary corrective to decades of overly exuberant apologetic arguments―arguments that have actually hurt the Christian faith. The writers are refreshingly honest, and they do not pull their punches. They observe poignantly that apologetic works on the reliability of the New Testament text have been drifting away from a proper, well-researched, accurately documented scholarship that is anchored to actual data. Apologists have had a tendency to regurgitate other apologetic works, which in turn are based on other apologetic works. Meanwhile, the scholarship that is supposedly behind the popular declarations in many an evangelical trade book is out-of-date, misunderstood, or simply ignored. These young scholars have something to say―not only to Christian speakers and writers but to non-Christian speakers and writers and even to New Testament scholars of all stripes. I was happily stunned to see the depth of discussion, the candid examination, and the up-to-date bibliography in each chapter. Although Myths and Mistakes in New Testament Textual Criticism is written in clear, user-friendly prose, the contents are well-grounded and perspicacious. I intend to utilize this volume unapologetically in my introduction as a primary source for several analyses." (From the foreword by Daniel B. Wallace, Dallas Theological Seminary and Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts)

The 20th-Century Children's Book Treasury: Picture Books and Stories to Read Aloud, by Janet Schulman

Amazon.com Review

Believe it or not, 44 complete read-aloud classics and future classics--from Goodnight Moon to Stellaluna--are packed in this remarkably svelte, positively historic anthology. Flipping through the 308 pages of The 20th-Century Children's Book Treasury is like browsing a photo album of beloved friends and family. The familiar faces of Curious George and Ferdinand the Bull peer earnestly from the pages, and scenes from Madeline and Millions of Cats resonate as if you just experienced them yesterday. Think of the advantages of carrying this book on a vacation instead of a suitcase of single titles! (Your kids can always revisit their dog-eared hardcovers when they get home.) This impressive collection of concept books, wordless books, picture books, and read-aloud stories was artfully compiled by longtime children's book editor and publisher Janet Schulman. Stories are coded red, blue, and green to designate age groupings from baby/toddler books such as Whose Mouse Are You?, through preschool books such as Where the Wild Things Are, to longer stories for ages 5 and older such as Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. The reason the book isn't bigger than Babar is because many of the illustrations from each story were reduced or removed to fit the anthology's format. (Leo Lionni's Swimmy, for example, takes up 5 pages total, compared to its original 29 pages.) Brief biographical notes that are surprisingly quirky shine a little light on the 62 authors and illustrators, and an index helps, too, for the child who likes one story best. We love the idea of being within easy reach of a Star-Belly Sneetch, a William Steig donkey, and a Sendak monster at all times, and we're sure your little bookworms will, too. From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 4-Forty-four selections fill this shiny, heavy compendium, gathered to encourage parents to develop the reading-aloud habit. Most are well-known picture books, but there is a short story by Joan Aiken, a chapter from Winnie the Pooh, and stories from books in beginning-to-read series. Goodnight Moon, a small set of Helen Oxenbury's board books, a Berenstain Bears entry, and other short pieces for the very youngest children are mixed with Stellaluna, The Stinky Cheese Man, Madeline, and older and newer favorites quite disparate in size and design. Some appear in spacious spreads, similar to their original formats. Others are compressed with great chunks of text and few pictures or several pages of the original full-length version stacked on a single page, diminishing details, colors, or the delicious moments of humor, drama, or innuendo. Gone are most of the illustrations for Millions of Cats, and Richard Egielski's Tub People have lost their unique patina and pose in these minuscule renderings. Though much is lost in the translation, the treasury does indeed offer an eclectic variety of good stories, and many children might encounter new favorites here. Concluding biographical notes on the authors and illustrators, a listing of the stories by three age categories, an index, and acknowledgments of original publication details complete the package.Margaret Bush, Simmons College, BostonCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

First, you need to know what you are actually getting with this book. This is a condensed version of some of the most favorite children's stories - 44 of them, in fact. All of the original text is in the stories except for two of the stories - AMELIA BEDELIA and PETUNIA - and they are condensed. What has been cut out of the book are many of the original illustrations. And in most cases, the illustrations that remain are greatly reduced in size.To me, this is a good way to find out which books are your children's (or grandchildren's) favorites and then you can purchase a full copy. This book allows you to browse. The stories in the book are wonderful. And the illustrations that ARE included are colorful and greatly add to the stories. One thing I really appreciated was that each story is color coded so you can match it up to the reading level of the child. Red is for youngest, blue is for preschool, and green is for stories told mainly by text rather than having a lot of pictures. At the beginning of each story, there is the name of the author, the illustrator, original publishing date and sometimes a note of interest about the story.

The amount of stories in the book are mind-boggling, I flipped through it with my wife and we were both amazed at the sheer number of stories they managed to cram into a book no thicker than your average cookbook. My chief complaint though is the formatting. the stories are spread out in such a way that you'll have page 1 and 3 of a book on the left side and page 2 and 4 on the right. It was very confusing to me until I realized what was going on. Not only does it make reading the stories a little awkward, but it also upsets the pace of the illustrations. I'm using this book to read to my daughter at night, but I won't be giving it to her to read since I don't want any weird reading habits forming. As a companion to the original books though this book is a god send. I can hand the book to my daughter and let her read along in her own book as I read from the Treasury book. (any weird reading habits I have are fully engrained by now). There are no loss of illustrations that I've found so far, and there is even a small icon on the pages that let you know the reading level of the book you're reading. The "too long didn't read" version is this book is a great companion book, but shouldn't be used on it's own unless you're reading it to someone. So 3 1/2 stars as a stand-alone products and 5 stars as a book companion.

Bought this to give my sister as a gift for her baby, since our copy has been a fixture of bed-time routine. My son often asks to read from the "big book" and chooses a story. Options cover a big range of complexity, cultural background, language & grammar types, and are often accompanied by great illustration. Highly recommended!

I was a skeptic but seriously this is a great find. It was a gift when my oldest was 3, and we still can pick this book up and find bedtime stories for all, now 5,8, and 10. Sure we love the "real" book experience, but how much would all of these stories cost?? And how hard is it to find the right books? They are in here. Especially if you are looking for a gift for a young family who are never going to put that much money into books, or for parents who are wondering what in the world to try to read to their kids.

I bought this a year and a half ago for my four year old and it immediately became his favorite book. It's the only one he didn't immediately destroy (and still hasn't been destroyed). I've read him stories from this book on most nights since, and while I've tried to get him into other books, he always returns to asking for stories from this one. He now reads these stories TO ME almost every night. This was one of those "got more than my money's worth" items that are such rare finds. The stories are a perfect length for bedtime reading, some very brief, some longer but none too long. The reading difficulty ranges from raw beginner to advanced; there will likely be something for your child's skill level. A couple of the stories aren't terribly interesting, but we just naturally avoid those and 95% of the rest of the selections are pure gold. So far, this is my most highly recommended children's book.

The best example of what I was looking for in, "The 20th-Century Children's Book Treasury", is the first story. 'Madeline' by Ludwig Bemelmans, Begins: "In an old House in Paris / that was covered with vines / Lived twelve little girls in two straight line.", a simple, lyrical story just right for a 5 year old. Sometimes you buy a book and the words have to many syllables, the story is too complex, or the story line is to difficult to follow, or just plain boring. A story like 'Madeline' uses simple words, many are basic words that a five year old needs to learn/memorize. The Story is entertaining and easy to read. Another Story 'Freight Train' by Donald Crews is just like 'Madeline, but the words are simpler and deals with colors, and great pictures. This story is perfect for beginning readers, which is my main interest. There are other stories like 'Curious George' by H. A. Rey which are more involve, yet can still be use for an early reader. The story 'Sylvester and the Magic Pebble' by Willaim Steig is a bit more advance and would demand a reader with a good command of basic words and basic vocabulary or someone with a good beginners dictionary. The 20th-Century Children's Book Treasury... should satisfy the reading wants and levels of most young readers, and it should give parents a good choice of reading levels to chose from. The Book edited by Janet Schulman, is a collection of the most popular book of the 20th century. She has done the research, brought the books together most parents would buy for their kids; you can save some space and buy this wonderful collection. The illustrations/pictures are true to the individual books, very professional. I would have like if they had given the works a reading grade level, such pre-school, first grade, 4th grade etc.

A powerful tool for those that want to develop and progress an men

Good book

good study book

A great handbook for leaders of mens ministry

I might be biased - I am a man - but I believe that a men's ministry is one of the most important ministries that a church can offer. As Jairus King puts it in this stimulating book, "As a Christian for nearly two decades of my young life, I have witnessed church let out Sunday after Sunday with the same results. A few men gather to form a small crowd and talk about the latest sports or current news. Then, just as quickly as handshakes and smiles are exchanged, they vanish into the abyss and are only found again the next Sunday after service. Is this truly the fellowship that Christ had in mind for us?"No, of course it is not. As a bit of a natural loner myself, I have had to force myself to participate in men's ministries at various churches. Unfortunately, the results have been mixed. Many churches run men's breakfasts, featuring a guest speaker. There is a little time for chatting over the muesli and coffee, and the speaker may be inspiring, but then the next breakfast isn't for another month or more, and you don't really develop much sense of fellowship when you meet so infrequently. The best groups I've belonged to have been based on John Eldredge's "Wild at Heart" courses, where men meet weekly and can end up sharing quite intimate details about their lives and problems.Jairus King's book is a workbook for group study, with 12 lessons, followed by discussion points and questions designed to stimulate your understanding. He presents details of his own life. He talks about prison ministry, about social media, about temptation, and much more. These are not Bible studies as such - although Scripture is included in each chapter - but a series of presentations about living today as a man. These studies are extremely well thought-out and presented, and clearly derive from someone with experience in this field. I have not myself used the book in practice, but I am certain it would prove enormously beneficial to any church wondering about the direction of its men's ministry.

King is very qualified to write on this subject, holding two masters degrees in related fields - project management and Christian leadership. But this isn't a book about theory; it's about practice. By leading men's ministries over the years, he knows how to work with men and speak to men. This handbook should be useful to anyone doing men's ministry, even if it's your first time to ever lead a group. Don't let his academic background scare you - he resists using academic language and insider Jesus talk. Instead, he communicates in a conversational style that anyone can understand - no matter what your educational level or prior biblical study. His goal is to transform lives through helping men to establish bonds of trust, resulting in a lifetime of blessings. To help meet this goal, he covers 12 topics in 12 sessions, making it ideal for three months of weekly meetings. Here are the 12 sessions:Why a Men's Ministry?Form a Bond and Strengthen ItEvangelize, Evangelize, EvangelizeAm I My Brother's Keeper? The Power of PrayerHave a Little FaithTemptationWhat's the Purpose? Is That Me?Fasting for GodGive Him Some PraiseA New MeMen need to support one another, particularly in these challenging times. The icebreakers, discussion questions, scriptures and personal stories combine to make this an effective guide to make true fellowship happen. Highly recommended.

Jairus King has produced a men's ministry manual that I think provides some beautiful bones on which to flesh out a potentially life changing ministry for men. Let's face it--men's ministry is difficult. The author points out the superficial nature of most male relationships but declares that it need not be that way. In fact, men want trusting relationships--but how do you build them? He has found that this material works. Mr. King is in a position to observe how things are, what works and does not work--he's a pastor. But he wasn't always a pastor and that also gives him a unique perspective. He knows what worked, what didn't work and what finally changed him. And he's not so different from any other man! This manual holds promise. As an educator and a pastor's wife, I think this material has wonderful potential. The twelve lessons in this manual could easily be a three month module, or form a year-long outline. Either way it will set in motion forces for building men with dynamic faith. Especially when combined with practical projects--opportunities to work together in real life, shoulder to shoulder working these truths into their lives. Sort of like creating guided exercises before giving independent work, in teacher-speak! There is no theological vocabulary to scare anyone away. King has a wonderful down-to-earth approach. I recommend giving it an opportunity to prove itself--the right tool applied to the right problem works wonders!

The Poisoned City: Flint's Water and the American Urban Tragedy, by Anna Clark

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of July 2018: Flint, Michigan, has become a byword for municipal failure. When the government switched the city's water source, residents started to complain that the water tasted strange and they were growing ill. After repeated strong statements from the city and state claiming the water was just fine, interspersed with perplexing boil-water alerts, residents finally took large-scale water testing into their own hands, and a local hospital analyzed its patient data to prove that residents were suffering levels of lead poisoning at an unheard-of scale. Detroit journalist Anna Clark deftly sets the stage for Flint's man-made disaster: the big drop in population that affected the pipe infrastructure, Flint's financial emergencies, and the long history of sidelining poor and African-American residents in Flint. As Flint's water failures cascade and the population continues to sicken, Clark provides even-keeled reporting of the crisis even as the outrages pile up despite Michigan's attempts to bury them. Those who also read A Civil Action by Jonathan Harr will wonder how we got to this point with bad water yet again…and why, this time, it’s the government who is harming its citizens. The Poisoned City will open readers' eyes to both the scary truth that most of our cities rely on equally weak water infrastructure and how a city's residents can force others to listen. —Adrian Liang, Amazon Book Review

Review

“An exceptional work of journalism. Clark delivers a thorough account of a still-evolving public health crisis, one with an unmistakable racial subtext.... Her book is a deeply reported account of catastrophic mismanagement. But it’s also a celebration of civic engagement, a tribute to those who are fighting back against governmental malpractice.”―San Francisco Chronicle“It’s hard to overstate how important Anna Clark’s new book is... A taut, riveting and comprehensive account... Clark is meticulous in untangling the welter of misstatements, cover-ups and dismissals of the problem’s severity by officials convinced that staunching the red ink hemorrhaging the crippled economies of Flint and Michigan somehow was more important than children afflicted by lead poisoning.”―USA Today“A comprehensive chronicle of the crisis―with an eye for the institutional corruption and indifference that enabled it.”―The New York Times“Clark writes powerfully about the environmental consequences of a shrinking city, about how Flint’s financial decline drove the decision to switch drinking-water sources… She’s most effective describing the racism that shaped Flint.”?The New York Times Book Review“A thorough, nuanced account of the public health disaster in Flint… Clark goes into exquisite detail explaining not only what happened, but also why it happened… Clark does a masterful job weaving together history, science and rigorous reporting to tell Flint’s story.”―Science News“Perfectly exemplifies the miracle of journalism granted the freedom to spill off the pages of periodicals and onto the spacious confines of a book. … Fifteen years from now, The Poisoned City could be the definitive account of the Flint water crisis in the annals of planning and urbanism literature. Right now, in 2018, it's the definitive call to action.”―Planetizen“An arresting and copiously documented saga of moneyed corruption… A bracing, closely reported chronicle… Clark ably pieces together the grotesque convergence of forces that transformed Flint into a byword of failed oversight and artificially induced hazard. And she rightly notes that the water crisis, as sudden and unexpected as it might have seemed, was the culmination of more than a generation’s worth of systemic neglect and cynical austerity-minded pillaging from on high.”―Bookforum“A meticulously annotated, brutally honest (she names names), and compassionately narrated account of a disgraceful American crisis... The Poisoned City is a cautionary tale for every town and city across the land.”―The Christian Science Monitor“Searing scrutiny... Riveting... A sobering read through all the spin and cover ups... A cornucopia of history and responsibly researched details... I have yet to encounter a more thorough, accurate or readable account of the poisoning of Flint’s municipal water supply than The Poisoned City. This is an important book, for Flint, for all American cities, and for our nation.”―East Village Magazine (Flint, Michigan)“Gripping and packed with meticulously sourced reportage... Clark’s rich account intersperses policy and environmental science with vivid portraits of Flint and its citizens, ramping up the tension as the horror unfolds.... A must-read―not only for those interested in environmental science and policymaking, but for anyone who believes that access to clean drinking water is a basic human right.”―Nature“Incisive and informed... In the first full accounting of the Flint water crisis, Clark combines a staggering amount of research and several intimate story lines to reveal how the Michigan city was poisoned by its leaders and then largely abandoned to its fate by state officials.... Clark takes no prisoners, naming all the names and presenting the confirming research. ‘Neglect,’ she warns, ‘is not a passive force in American cities, but an aggressive one.’”―Booklist (starred review)“A complex, exquisitely detailed account... A potent cautionary tale of urban neglect and indifference... Clark goes far beyond the immediate crisis―captured nationally in images of bottled water being distributed to Flint’s poor, the most severely affected―to explain ‘decades of negligence’ that had mired the city in ‘debt, dysfunctional urban policy, disappearing investment, disintegrating infrastructure, and a compromised democratic process.’ She warns that other declining American cities are similarly threatened.”―Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Compelling... A comprehensive account [that] boils down this complex tragedy... While devastating, this account is also inspiring in its coverage of the role of Flint’s ‘lionhearted residents’ and their grassroots activism, community organizing, and independent investigation... This extremely informative work gives an authoritative account of a true American urban tragedy that still continues.”―Publishers Weekly“With every heartbreaking detail, Anna Clark’s must-read and beautifully rendered account of the Flint water crisis makes clear that this horrific poisoning of an essential American city was never just an unfortunate accident. Instead, it was the tragic, and indeed tragically inevitable, result of the fiscal, as well as environmental, racism that seems to run as deeply and powerfully in this country as water itself.”―Heather Ann Thompson, author of Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy“Anna Clark’s book on the Flint water crisis rises to a great challenge: it sacrifices neither complexity nor moral clarity. And by etching this story’s outlines in decades of racist neglect, it is not just a splendid work of journalism. It is a genuine contribution to history.”―Rick Perlstein, author of The Invisible Bridge: The Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan “The Poisoned City is a gripping account of a devastating, unnatural disaster. Through deep research and on-the-ground reporting, Anna Clark makes the case that Flint’s water crisis is the result of decades of disinvestment and neglect, worsened by austerity policies and governmental malfeasance. This is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand America’s ongoing failure to deal with environmental injustice, racial inequality, and economic marginalization.” ―Thomas J. Sugrue, author of The Origins of the Urban Crisis: Race and Inequality in Postwar Detroit “The story of the Flint crisis is disturbing enough even if one knows only a few details. But the entire case, as laid out by Anna Clark, is enraging. Clark has sifted the layers of politics, history, and myopic policy to chronicle the human costs of this tragedy. Flint is not an outlier, it’s a parable – one whose implications matter not just to a single municipality but to every city in the country and all who live in them.” ―Jelani Cobb, Ira A. Lipman Professor of Journalism, Columbia University“The poisoning of Flint was unintentional but it was no accident. Read Anna Clark’s empathetic yet emphatic history and you will understand how this American tragedy could have been prevented – and why it wasn’t. Her book will make you mad, but it will also give you hope for the rebirth of our cities and maybe even our democracy.”―Dan Fagin, author of Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation

When I first heard about the Flint water crisis, I just couldn't believe it. An entire city no longer had safe drinking water. The Poisoned city examines the events that led up to this crisis. Throughout the book, Clark slowly reveals the history of Flint, which at times i found kind of boring, but I recognize that it is necessary to truly understand how unique this city is.Clark's account reveals that this kind of catastrophe is a result of decaying infrastructure. The population of flint has decreased significantly over the past 50 years, but the city water system is still the same size. I was shocked to discover that people living in flint had some of the highest water bills in the country. This is an interesting book, but I don't believe it is the definitive account of the Flint Water Crisis. That crisis is still unfolding, and I would have liked it if Clark included more first hand accounts of the daily routine that people living there faced. The book is also vary short. It is 300 pages, but 100 of those pages are notes, and there are about 50 pages worth of Flint City History, which I didn't find all that interesting. I bought the book to learn about lead in the water, not about hunting and trading in the 1700s.

An insightful and deeply researched account not only of the Flint Water Crisis, but also it’s cultural, political and economic antecedents. Clark sets out, and succeeds, in answering the age old question posed at every tragic failure of the public trust: How could this have happened here? The answers, in all their multifarious complexity, are presented clearly, concisely and without unnecessary contempt for the bureaucrats that slept through this man-made disaster. Yes, the book discusses the individuals who bear fault for specific technical decisions in the case, but it also lays bear the decades-old and systematic governance failures that laid the foundations for these rotten public utilities. Clark is a comprehensive and deeply sympathetic researcher and an adept writer. I flew through this book and was satisfied by what I learned. The conclusion also sets forth some cogent advice for the prevention of similar public health failures. Well worth it.

This book explains very well why municipal authorities simply do not want to have real-time water quality (and other environmental parameters') monitoring. There is a real business niche for INDEPENDENT water (and air) quality monitoring and posting such information in real time. This is MANY billions' worth opportunity. The book proves it. To my taste, the book is a bit overloaded with emotional and personal information, but well, nothing is perfect. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend.

A very thorough account of this tragedy with many details I was not aware of. This book is very readable and the story is heartbreaking, especially since it is not fiction.

Excellent detail about the regional politics and the rise and fall of a once admired city. Helped me put the news stories in context and to understand what and why certain decisions were fatefully made. An easy read, and the type of book you will have trouble putting down! Very extensive research in the back that was as much fun to read as the actual story. Looking forward to Anna Clark's next publications!

so far, it's very interesting

An important chronicle.

I'm rarely on the edge of my seat for any book, but this telling of the Flint water crisis *hurts*. It drew me in, to tell me it's not just about poisoned water. Come for the crisis, stay for the rich history and resolution of Flint, and maybe think about your own community

This is my favorite of the Rollin On Series. Aiden is Quiet. Steady. Calm. Until he finds Tina. Then he’s Crazy. Shaken. Sexy. Aiden is the dark horse of the group...you don’t expect him to come out front and center but boy does he ever.Laugh, cry, yell, bite your nails...get a little hot and bothered...from beginning to end I could not put this book down.

Don’t miss this series! You can read just one book are all! I recommend all. You’ll be laughing out loud!!

I have been hooked on this series since the first book and look forward to the next one when I finish the current one! This characters are so easy to love and route for and get heart broken for. Absolutely love this series!

I Love the Rollin on series, great books for romance and true love. This chick knows mma and training too!

great

Loved everything about this series! read this book in one day. And definitely Ready for another one! Bring on Jon and Tink

Emilia keeps delivering! This series makes you want to be a part of this family.

>Book Review – Finding Peace>I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 4th in the Rollin On series and ends in an HEA. Tina and her daughter, Evie are on the run and hiding from an abusive man. This man is also rich and powerful. Aiden is the quiet Kincaid brother. He is the fighters’ trainer and the voice of reason. Once everyone learns Tina’s story, the alpha protectiveness kicks in. This book has a ton of humorous moments. There is also a miscommunication between Aiden and Tina at first that is cute as Aiden tries to protect Evie from who he believes is a crazy woman.>The funniest scene is the girls’ night out when the girls are all arrested for peeing in public. Of course this all leads to unknown pregnancies as the test sticks are all mixed up. Tina’s job as a photographer includes boudoir photos. This plot point was never used as a source of jealousy for Aiden and I was expecting it to be.>This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this book 5 stars. Everyone is in the story and Jack really comes in to his own. The danger in this book is super serious and page turning.
