Although familiar with Averill Harriman from my many sorties into the murky, war-torn, political world of FDR and Churchill, Edward R. Murrow and Gil Winant were peripheral characters in my library.Murrow, of course, was the CBS radio reporter wunderkind whose "This is London... " signature brought World War II into the homes of Americans on a regular basis, opening their minds and hearts to the plight of Great Britain and the danger of German aggression. His reports from the rooftops of London helped to pave the way for a lifting of isolationism as FDR cautiously prodded America to enter the fray.John Gilbert Winant, Olson tells us, was a natural leader and the American ambassador who soothed British spirits and soul following former Ambassador Joe Kennedy's brash, appeasement-centered, diplomatic relations. And Averill Harriman, a rich businessman anxious to play power games at a global level, lived large romantically as he cut a wide social swath across London.When you have a few hours to yourself, pick up this paperback and settle in. Her ability to take a reader through complexity and intense human impact without the aridity usually associated with historical commentary is amazing.In this book three well-to-do Americans wind up in Winston Churchill’s coterie as advisors and watchdogs over the activities between the US and Britain as the war escalates. They eventually end up very sympathetic to the plight of the Britishers and less than approving of the opposition from FDR and reluctant US citizens to getting America involved. The hardy and determined British citizens suffered greatly as the United States refused to come to their assistance in battling the German forces that threatened to obliterate their nation and the misery was exacerbated by this obstinacy.John Winant was the idealistic US ambassador to Britain, Averell Harriman ran FDR’s Lend-Lease program in London, and Edward R. Murrow was head of CBS news in Europe. They all developed such close ties with Churchill that they were actually considered part of his official circles. More than that, all three became romantically involved with Churchill’s daughters. The author handles this touchy situation with aplomb, sparing the reader any salacious details that would detract from her scholarly approach.Each of the three had serious personality traits that they were able to muffle as they assisted Churchill with his decisions. All three were immensely wealthy and/or influential, they were idealistic, and their interest in the British situation was genuine. Winant was extremely shy and a poor speaker, but his boyish charm and unquestionable loyalty made him a favorite with the British people. Harriman, an industrial scion, was intensely self-centered and tended towards covert attempts to ingratiate himself with Churchill. He was refereed to as a “bum-sucker” in the book. Murrow was outspoken and given to critical comments about the US in his broadcasts and writings, something greatly appreciated by Churchill in his never ending attempts to get America involved in the war.When America entered the war after Pearl Harbor, all three, along with Churchill and the rest of the country, were giddy with the decision. Lynne Olson writes beautifully and her research is wonderful, but the most interesting part of this book to me was not the three Americans living in London during the war years about whom she titles her book. I tired a bit of reading about their various dalliances. The most interesting part of the book, from my point of view, was the relationship between Roosevelt and Churchill and the many important things about which they did not agree. Also, very interesting was her description of the relationship between the English people and the American soldiers stationed in England during the war years. Much of this was new to me even though the events took place many years ago. One can easily see how Olson's research for this book led her to write "Last Hope Island" which is a "must-read" for history buffs of World War II.

In reading about America's history, and recently reading several other books that deal with this time frame, I find Olson's work to be accurate beyond subjectivism and insightful as it relates to the politics of leadership and conflict. FDR was not my favorite President. America's behavior, but mostly in hindsight, leading up to WWII as she related to other free nations under attack was less than appealing and this book will give the reader some insight which may influence their current outlook. I don't judge the United States behavior "back then" with our current attitudes and perspectives (for instance, the internment of Japanese Americans; which we have tried to repay but in fairness to our past generation may well have seemed the very best solution to the extreme hate directed at those innocents) but do take notice of ideological motivations and self-serving behaviors and wonder how we might be the same today? A good book filled with both historical and personal facts and findings that flesh out a period in the US's and Britain's history that is now lost to our progeny.

A beautifully written account the the events experienced by a young girl during China's cultural revolution, a sad and dangerous time in the country's development. I thought this book would be a good one for a social studies class on China, perhaps to follow The Good Earth Makes the reader appreciate books, knowledge, truth and freedom wherever they may be found.

A really good story about a girl growing up in Communist China. Story line was slow in place but overall not bad.

This was a really good book, and very interesting if you're interested in books about China under the Communist Party.

Great addition to my Chinese Revolution collection in my classroom!

There is nothing wrong with this book, but I'm only giving it 3 stars because I have read other memoirs about the cultural revolution that offered a clearer look. Wild Swans is one of those books. Snow Falling in Spring is a good book for someone who doesn't have time to spend on another book like Wild Swans (500+ pages). It also isn't as explicit about the hardships and pain that people endured.

This is the catalogue of the exhibition organized by New York's Museum of Modern Art, mounted at the Tate Modern in London from April to September 2014 and then at the MoMA from October 2014 until February 2015. The impetus for the exhibition was the major campaign of conservation of Matisse's huge "The Swimming Pool" cut-out, which the artist designed for his dining room in the Hôtel Régina in Nice in 1952; the Museum restored and remounted it and, in this exhibition, presents it once again to the public for the first time in over twenty years--but now, in order to reflect its original environment, it has been newly installed in a room constructed with the original proportions, details, and architecture of Matisse's dining room. This is a very major exhibition, the most extensive presentation of Matisse's cut-outs ever mounted. Although "The Swimming Pool" is its conceptual heart, the show encompasses a much wider range of works, including illustrated books, textiles, stained glass, and related drawings. The explosion of creativity and imagination that Matisse presented as the last act of his artistic life is truly amazing; it is not given to many people to invent an entirely new art form in their seventies, especially not one that vibrates with such youthful exuberance and juice as these cut-outs do. When he exhibited "Zulma" at the Salon de Mai in 1952 (at the tender age of eighty-two), critics referred to it as "the youngest and most innovative work there," and to himself as "the youngest exhibitor" (162), and in looking through this volume, I kept having to remind myself that Matisse was, in fact, really, born in 1869 and already over thirty at the turn of the century.This remarkable body of late work is authoritatively discussed in the catalogue's nine essays, all of which were written by senior curators and conservators at the Tate, the MoMA, or New York's Metropolitan Museum. They are short and concise (about eight or nine pages on average) and generously illustrated by some seventy accompanying reproductions. Topics discussed include how the artist came upon the idea of the cut-out in the beginning; their gradual evolution from simple maquettes in the service of developing works to independent works of art on their own, and Matisse's own growing realization of what they were; their reception by critics and the public at large; the "Dance" mural for the Barnes Foundation and designs for the ballet "Rouge et Noir"; the cut-outs for the "Jazz" book; designs for the Chapel at Vence and the late monumental mural works, etc. These are all thoughtful and informative essays; I was particularly intrigued by Samantha Friedman's "Game and Endgame," which elucidates the compositional permutations of the pieces on the model of the chessboard; and by Nicholas Cullinan's "Chromatic Composition," which examines the intermediate, ambivalent position of the cut-outs between figuration and abstraction (e.g., Matisse gave his 1953 piece "The Snail" the alternative title "Composition Chromatique," much as--in a very different context--Whistler's painting slips between "Portrait of the Artist's Mother" and "Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1"). There is also a fascinating technical examination of the paints, papers, mounting practices, etc. used in creating these works, procedures at least as complicated as those involved in any of the more traditional media. In addition, there is a sixty-page photo essay, "In the Studio," which is not merely the kind of supplementary collection of workshop photos we find in many catalogues, but an essential component in understanding Matisse's creative process: as the compositions became ever larger, the "supports" went from boards to the walls of his rooms, to the extent that, finally, the studio itself became the support. Successive photographs of the studio allow us to follow the stages of various compositions; it is an engaging and challenging exercise for the reader to try to reconstruct the artist's reasons for substituting a leaf cut-out, say, for an amoeba, or trying to see why he finally came down against using any of the various "Blue Nudes" in "The Parakeet and the Mermaid" (1952). A fine touch is that the photographs are annotated with the corresponding catalogue numbers of the works in the exhibition; this greatly facilitates the reader's comparison and use of the book as a self-educational tool.As far as the catalogue is concerned, there are 136 plates of reproductions in excellent color (and, of course, riotous color: Picasso once claimed that only Matisse and Chagall knew what color really is). One very nice feature of the book is that the endpapers reproduce the color charts of the gouache paints produced by the manufacturer Linel, illustrating the great range of them available to Matisse, and of which he liberally availed himself: the technical analysis reveals that he used over fifteen varieties of orange, eight turquoises, and ten greens (255). No wonder the book is a carrousel of color! Most of the plates are printed full-page; for a couple of the longer works there are gatefolds, and "The Swimming Pool" itself has a double gatefold. This is altogether a very delightfully produced volume and unhurried in its design and layout. It has some selected bibliography, a checklist of the exhibited works with the usual curatorial data, and a comprehensive index. There is no dearth of books on Matisse, including on the cut-outs, but this seems to be the most complete and best illustrated one on these magnificent late works, and it's highly recommended for all Matisse aficionados.

I thought the color was not bright enough in many of the images. It did give a good review of the exhibit and included useful information. Although many of the details can be found online in other sources. The fold out of the swimming pool (1952) made the purchase worth the purchase of yet another book on Matisse. It was well documented with photos of the artist and of this drawings. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that has an interest in Matisse.

Saw this at MOMA in NYC when I saw the cutouts November 2014. Didn't want to cart the book around so waited and ordered in on Amazon. Worth owning The collection was borrowed from museums and private parties all over the world. A once in half a life-time opportunity.

As much as I loved the show at MoMa, I disliked this exhibition catalog. Page after page references images that are scattered through the book and are hard to find. The essays themselves are thoughtful and well researched, the colors are spot on, but reading this and trying to flip forward and back searching for the images was a pain.......

Bought a copy of this when I saw the "cut out" exhibit at MOMA. When I came home several of my artist friends were drowling over it so I bought some on Amazon as birthday and Christmas presents. It was WAY cheaper and the same EXACT book. One thing you should know is that ALL the copies of this book seem to have a print defect on the cover…even the one I bought at MOMA…so not be be distressed when you receive it from Amazon and think that somehow it is second rate.

A really informative book. This was a great resource for me when epilepsy first became a part of our lives. Written in simple terms that are easy to understand and works as a good reference tool when trying to access new-to-you information. The author is one of the doctors at the practice we go to as well and is a really well known expert in the epilepsy field.

Amazon has a number of books about epilepsy, but I chose this one because it was pertinent to an adult just beginning to learn about the disease. I sent this book to my 30-year old grandson who has been diagnosed with epilepsy recently. He reports that with the clear and well-organized information in this book, he now can engage his neurologist in intelligent questions and conversations. The learning provided by this book has removed a lot of his initial panic and stress. Because the doctor now knows that his patient is knowledgeable, he spends more time discussing the details of the disease with him.

For anyone with epilepsy this is a treasure trove of information they are unlikely to have gleaned in such detail even from the most helpful of medical practitioners. The book addresses all aspects of epilepsy - types, possible causes, social impacts, medications, possible surgeries - in language that can be understood by all but without dumbing-down. It is written for the USA, but was easily adaptable for us in Australia. Indispensable.

Speaking as a school librarian, be careful! This is a wonderfully, beautifully illustrated book, but it is not - by vocabulary, by number of pages, or by concept - a book for young children. I would say this is a book for ages 10 and up.

This artwork is gorgeous. Like most beautiful ever. Great use of layers and white space. Ahhh! So good

Gorgeous art book, with embossing and beautiful design. The ending is a bit grim if you're thinking of giving it to a child.

This book is a work of art. The cover, the pages, the illustrations, the embossing, the die cuts, there is so much to appreciate! I have read it several times already, and I see something new each time. And the message is beautiful!

This is an absolutely stunning book with a really neat message that reveals itself slowly. That said it was so delicate and pristine I didn’t really want my kiddos grubbing all over it. I wish they had done a more durable paperstock.

A very beautiful and original book, but there is no way that a 4 year old child would get this book. This is more for an older child who appreciates looking at beautiful pictures and paper art.

This poster book was everything I hoped for and more. It is filled with vibrant color posters of all the Disney movies, including Pixar produced ones. Some foreign posters are included as well. My music students are putting on a Disney theme's spring program, so the book will come in handy as we decorate the walls leading to the performance area.

A pretty good book, really large in size. I question the inclusion of some of the posters. More posters of classic movies would be a lot better.

THIS BOOK IS A MUST FOR DISNEY FANS.HI IS MY YOUTHT AND SHILDHOODS DREAMMAKER.AND I CAN NEVER GET ENOUGH OF HIS WORK.AND I HAVE USED A LOT OF MONEY ON IT.

When I first saw that this title was gong to be released I was very excited. Being a fan of both Disney's animated and live-action films I couldn't wait to see many of the posters from over the years. While the book covers all of the major animated films, live action is a different story, Of the 141 pages a little more than 30 are devoted to live-action posters. Most of the live action posters featured are made up from the more recent theatrical releases. The book is basically 80% Animated titles and 20% live-action. If they had entitled the book Disney Animated Posters from Steamboat Willie to Inside Out then one would get what they expected. Some of the films are even featured twice because of a difference in artwork or style. The book itself is solid and well crafted and the pages are very durable and sturdy. It would make a great coffee table book and a good addition to a Disney book library, While I would still recommend this book, it's not everything the title says it is.

The posters will greatly appeal to Disney fans. It is just too bad that the price may well be beyond the spending money of the intended audience.
