I served with Leo in 3/75, never in the same platoon but I spent time with his sister platoon down the hall. Who knew us big dumb Rangers could spell words much less write so well??? Lest We Forget is a great read that never lulled in its pace of either action or humor and made it pretty tough to put it down. Here's to making sure history doesn't forget us! Cheers.RLTW

I write a lot of reviews and also write pulp fiction. Therefore, my reading interests cover a wide rangeof genres. Military history/stories being near the top.I especially have a spot for Special Forces Medics.Since I have worked Government contracts training18 D's, (SF Medics).Lest We Forget, brought back many memories, on alllevels...Great characters, fast moving storyline, will keep thereader's interest. Some stories are repeated, but that is par for the coursewhen it comes to SF medic types.I see you laughing over there. You know what I am talking about...Good read, well worth the time.

This text provided an over view of the nearly two years of medical training a medic in The Regiment receives. However, I was disappointed by the lack of stories or anecdotes about the author's experiences during his training. Those experiences are what make the Ranger medic what they are: medical professionals who "show the world... a highly trained soldier." The other sections of the book which discuss RIP/RASP and deployment down range illustrate very well the struggle to "uphold the prestige [&] honor...of the Rangers." The author does well to implant into the mind of the reader the often contradictory moral decisions and "intestinal fortitude required to fight on" in the asymmetrical warfare of which the Global War on Terror (GWOT) consists.

This book is a quick read and very straightforward. As a former Special Operations soldier myself, the thing that stood out the most for me was the theme of brotherhood. I laughed out loud as Leo recounted tales of debauchery and fun with his fellow warrior brothers. Leo has the ability to tell a story so that you can imagine yourself standing along side the characters. Leo talks quite a bit about the lighter side of being a Special Operations soldier, but he also does not shy away from the hard stuff. His descriptions of combat and deployments shed an incredible light into what Special Operations veterans have been doing in the past decade for our country. Great read, read it it in two nights.

I loved this book is an understatement! When I started reading i couldn't put this book down! Leo is funny and so "in your face" with honesty and forthrightness. You immediately want to meet him and spend a day listening to him (i was gonna say have a beer with him but I couldn't hang with him, lol). I was drawn to this book by several things. First, I'm an Army vet from way back in peacetime 1983. I had the privilege of meeting and working with the 2\75th Rangers at Ft Lewis Wa. I was a brand new Transportation 2d Lt (don't hold that against me). They were remarkable soldiers to say the least! As a civilian now I was able to get my EMT-B license through work a few years ago. So I loved reading about his education and how he applied it. Nothing prepares you or gives you the in depth training like the military does. I highly respect all of our active duty service men and women and veterans and wish we could do more for them! It would be an honor to be able to know and have a friend like L. Jenkins. My best years were in the Army. Get this book, read it, you won't be disappointed. You'll laugh and cry and sit in amazement!

Let me start out by saying no real life hero wears a cape, ate from a silver spoon, or walks a straight line. Nor are they perfect. But in today's war, men like Leo are perfect for the heroism (as some might refer to it as in this country) required to complete the missions set before them by this Nations leaders. The opportunity to have read some of his experiences, good & bad, without "sugar coating", was humbling & another reminder to never complain about what I have to do in this uniform. Many will cast there stones at him for the things he has said in this book but I can guarantee that they themselves are far from perfect & would never be able to face the dangers & risks that he & these men have placed themselves in to protect our great nation. It was apparent he never did it for the thank you's, handshakes, or respect but it is well deserved & goes without request. Thank you Leonidas Jenkins. I'll always respect you for the type of leader & soldier you we're, the epitome of a Ranger Medic. There aren't enough words to describe my gratitude for men such as yourself. Keep doing what you do because it's damn fine living & no one can take away the accomplishments you have conquered & will conquer in the years to come.

I thought that I had a good idea of the life of the soldiers at war. I spent many years as a war correspondent photographerin Vietnam, Laos. I even got airborne training from the Vietnamese army to be able to join them in their combat and laterwhen the US were fully committed I was a lot in the field. This book with the detailed description of the making of a Medicand later his activities so well written and so full of the human side of the life of Jenkins besides the war activities is an eye openerand increases my respect for the soldier in the field. The details and then comments in all the situations make this book easy to read and feel the action.Too many of us do not realize what the US soldiers goes through. Wake up and salute

This book is fantastic. A short read, but very interesting. I get bothered by typo's and so a star was knocked off. I don't mean bad grammar as in "he won't steeeeel a tracktor, he drujk". But there were a few typo's here and there that I noticed, which would have been fixed if ran through a simple grammar/spell checker. But it was great nonetheless, and a book I'll be picking up again to read.

My daughter and I started off reading the Little House books together. We enjoyed them so much that we started looking for other books similar to them. We didn't realize that there were stories about other women in that family. We are thoroughly enjoying reading about all 5 generations of the family. While the books about Rose, Caroline, Charlotte and Martha are not quite as enjoyable as the original series, they are still a must read for any Little House fans. I would recommend them all.

Martha leaves the valley for the first time. She continues to be her spunky self, yet discovers that she's not THE Laird's daughter only that she's A Laird's daughter. It makes her think about whether she's thought of herself as being better than others. In reading these Martha books, you witness a girl who although born into money wants to be looked upon and treated no better or no worse than any other child. She wants to give to, learn from, and mingle with servants, their families, and everyone else in the valley. In this particular book, she's goes to Perth to visit with her sister Grisie. While enjoying her visit with Grisie, she finds it a challenge to deal with the servants and Grisie's father-in-law who don't want her there. She wants to "behave" as she's been told to do, but she also wants them to know that she has her own personality and didn't come 'out of a cookie cutter.' This, as with all of the series, is a Great Story.

Martha is Laura Ingalls Wilder's great-grandmother and the "Martha series" are the books about her life in Scotland. This one has her beginning to grow up and learn to be a young lady. This is a great series of books, as are the ones that cover her daughter (Charlotte) and granddaughter (Caroline, Laura's mother). Remember these are not written by Laura, so they're different from the original Little House books, but they are excellent little books showing the author's view of how the girls' lives went.

My children love these books!!

Collecting all the Little House books.

My daughter has already read the Laure Ingle Wilder series and loved them so much she wanted to read more from the series. I encourage it not because it is good to read (though it is), but also because I love the fact that I don't have to worry about inappropriate material in these books. They were shipped fast and well packaged. It was a winner all around.

In this fourth book in the Martha Years series, ten-year-old Martha journeys to the bustling city of Perth to visit her newly married sister Grisie. This is Martha′s first time beyond the familiar heather hills and this city on the River Tay is more exciting than she could have ever imagined!I loved reading all about Martha with my son and sad to see this series end, it will be interesting to read her daughters series but at the same time strange to skip ahead. You could definitely tell Martha is growing up and maturing in this book as there are several scenes that are a little scary for younger children.Overall I loved this book and this whole series. I loved learning about the Scottish culture and the superstitions they had. I fell in love with the characters and am very interested to see who follows her into her adult life in the book series about her daughter.I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars.

In "Beyond the Heather Hills", the young, adventurous Martha Morse, is taking a trip away from home for the first time in her life. The only land she's laid eyes on before is her father's land of Glencaraid... but she's about to discover that there's so much more of the world.I cherish the moment that Martha and her older sister Grisie locked eyes and bonded like never before. It's a beautiful scene. There's other such enjoyable moments in "Beyond the Heather Hills" -- lots of things to chuckle over, but quite a few solemn moments too. And through it all, there's the Scottish brogue to keep every single conversation SO riveting.Although these books are nice and lovely to enjoy, this one seemed to have a few grim scenes that could be perceived as a little scary for youngsters reading it alone. For example, while visiting her older sister, Martha stays in a room which once belonged to a girl that is sometimes referred to as "Dead Cora", and Martha is unsettled with the situation for a while (who wouldn't?). About half-way through, Martha witnesses a man having a seizure -- and it's a very dramatic event for her to experience. There's much Scottish folklore in these books, which colors the culture well. Anyone would learn much about Scotland. (This series isn't just for children to enjoy, you know!)If only there were more books in this series! It's still hard for me to believe I've read the last of the Martha set, and there's no more! (This probably just means I'll have to re-read the series one day, as Martha Morse is now a character very close to my own heart.)Already I miss Cook, Nannie and Hedgie (yes, that's the hedgehog), Grisie, Alisdair, Duncan and Robbie, Auld Mary, and I think Miss Crow too. Plus I have the most curious of feelings towards Lew Tucker, the blacksmith's son. If only I could see a peek into Martha's future!

The book is about talking to children about money, and as far as that goes, it should be required reading in schools. Plain spoken and compelling, it describes a path that will lead young people away from the financial strife that plagues most Americans. In fact, it's a valuable read even for those without children, as failing to live within our means and set money aside is probably the number one financial issue of our time.

Easy to read and understand. Every child should have this book in their summer reading program. Parents should set aside time and effort to teach their children what this book has to offer.

Easy to read treatment of some complicated and important topics. The authors explain in simple terms the financial basics every parent should impart to their child. I plan to buy additional copies for my extended family.

Financial literacy is by far the biggest gap in our education system. Like Kelly I was fortunate to have a father who believed in imparting important financial lessons including: the magical power of compound interest, leave principle alone, and work with experts on financial planning, retirement planning (“There are no do-overs at age 65”) and estate planning. But this book identified a large number of areas where an advance warning would have been a lot more helpful (and less painful!) than my "on-the-job-training"! It is loaded with outstanding tips on dealing with and planning for the financial aspects of virtually every life decision. Regardless of where you are on life’s journey you will find practical implementation steps to help you become more financially literate!

Unlike most financial books or articles, this book covers the basics in a very easy to understand format. I've tried for years to teach my own kids the lessons I've learned. Hopefully, as most kids do, they will read this book and pay attention to someone other than their parents and realize how important financial planning is. I've known Terry for 30+ years and Kelly for her entire life. I remember them telling, or complaining, about some of their stories and learning from their experiences. Hopefully the next step will be to actually make financial planning a high school and college course. Why continue to leave it up to parents who may not have made the best decisions in the past.I highly recommend you read this book and encourage others to read it as well. Also remember, there are professionals out there that can help you no matter what your current financial situation is. Just ensure you choose the right one for you (it's in the book).

This book is great for EVERYONE, even those of us without kids! Kelly and Terry take an easy and understandable approach to financial management and keep it from being overwhelming. They provide concrete examples on budgeting which is so helpful. For the last few years, my husband and I have been very passionate about helping people manage their finances and get out of debt while we work to get rid of our debt as well. This will be a book we recommend to everyone and it will be under the Christmas Tree for family members too!

This should be taught in our high schools today. Great information on managing your debt, buying a house, investing and important topics on managing your finances. Provides perspectives and examples from the parent and their adult child in a simplistic way. Very easy to read and great content. I will be providing copies to my kid's friends.

This book is a wonderful gift to your kids. Not too technical. All the things that most of us had to learn the hard way, if we learned them at all. You can bet all my kids will have one In their Christmas stocking. Highly recommended.

The book was brand new, but it did not come with the mind tap access code. Just FYI

If anyone is wondering, this is essentially a combination of the Andrews text for the 901 and 902 (hardware, and software), combined into one text. I bought it because I returned my textbooks. I use it all the time for reference. Great text, especially if you're studying for the exams.

Amazon had this book for roughly $125 cheaper than that of my school's bookstore. I've finished my course, and finished top of my class. I recommend searching Amazon for school books, as it's usually quite a bit cheaper. My school offers a price-match, but I wasn't going to put up with that, just to rent the book. I wanted a hard copy for myself.

Fantastic book, love the layout of the chapters making it easy to understand.

Too much of the material is not current with the current Microsoft standards. The text is overpriced for the value you receive.

What can I say? It's just a textbook. I got an A in the class.

The cover is full of flaws from smudging to bends. Not what I expect from an expensive book.

This is cheaper than my school's price for sure. Saved about 30 bucks

How to be a Scientist, by Steve Mould

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–5—A collection of science history facts and related projects for elementary schoolers. The content is divided into six categories: nature, the body, chemistry, Earth, physics, and space. Each section introduces scientists and their discoveries along with simple tests that can be conducted at home. Most of the activities presented are very basic, with only a few experiments involving the use of control groups. The majority of items needed are easily found in the home: food, rulers, craft sticks, water bottles, soap, and paper plates. The only piece that might be hard to obtain is a fizzy vitamin tablet. Most youngsters can complete these tasks without supervision, and only a few projects require adult help. The illustrations are cartoonish; the people all have rounded features (hands, feet, heads), wide eyes, and square bodies. Notable scientists are drawn with identifiable traits in mind: Albert Einstein's white mop of hair, Marie Curie's bun, and Galileo's beard. The photographs are clear, sized appropriately, and well laid out on the page, and the use of variously sized fonts helps to break up the text, resulting in an eye-catching volume. Only the first few pages explain how to use the book to think like a scientist; the majority of the work centers on science concepts. VERDICT Though the title is a bit misleading, the work presents a great pool of ideas for kids and teachers.—Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio

We LOVE this book!! Seriously. I have 2 boys and we tried a few experiments in this book when I got a copy from NetGalley but then the book expired and my kids were bummed.Kids bummed over a science book? This book earned itself a permanent spot on our bookshelves. We haven't done a ton of experiments, but we do pull it out every couple of weeks and try something. What I love about this book is that most of the experiments are easy to do with items we already have around the house. So many times we've wanted to do experiments we've seen in other books or online only to find that we didn't have all the ingredients or items needed. Then the excitement over the experiment waned, and I would never go buy the missing items. With this book most of the experiments use things around the house or that most people already have in their homes. It makes it super easy to go from idea to execution.  This is easily THE BEST science experiment book we own.I received an advance reader copy of this book that I have chosen to review.

Experiments for young scientists to try!

If I had been given this book when I was a kid I would have been over the moon with excitement. I have always been a big science fan and as a kid I loved finding little experiments that taught me something or revealed something I wasn't expecting or were just plain fun--and this book is full of them. There are enough fun things to do and learn about in this book to keep a kid busy all summer long and probably vastly enhance their education as a bonus (but don't tell them that). The book is divided into six chapters: Natural World, Human Body, Chemistry, Earth, Physics and Space and within each chapter are profiles of great scientists (like Mary Anning who is regarded as the greatest fossil hunter of all time--what a great role model for a young girl), explanations of different aspects of that particular area of science (how color vision works, in the Human Body chapter), fun projects (a stellar spread on making paper airplanes and another on making bicycle wheels "sing in the Physics chapter), and just tons of fun things to make and try. There is no kid on Earth that has even the smallest amount of curiosity that won't love the book. I love it and I haven't been a kid for half a century, lol. Also, like all DK books, this one is beautifully designed and illustrated and the photos/illustrations are the best you'll find. The text is concise enough that even kids that don't like to read will stick with it. Years ago I taught science at a science museum in Connecticut and the minute I talked too long about science, I could see the kids start to fade, but the instant that I turned on a blacklight and made soap powder glow in the dark, they went nuts. If your kids are bored this summer, this book will revive them. :)By the way, this book isn't just for kids. I think adults will like it just as much and help them remember the stuff they learned a long, long time ago and probably forgot.

I love, love, love this book! How To Be A Scientist by Steve Mould is the perfect way to introduce science and scientific methods to young learners because every set of pages offers a fun, hands-on activity that reinforces the information given and encourages children to explore and experiment with science. There are 6 sciences covered: Natural World, Human Body, Chemistry, Earth, Physics and Space. Each science has multiple topics, each with their own activity. The majority of the activities require only common, household items so can be done easily.Like all DK books, every page is filled with bright, engaging pictures and illustrations. The font size is fairly large and there is plenty of white space so it isn't intimidating to young students. DK says this book is aimed at 7-9 year olds and I agree although older children will definitely enjoy the activities and experiments. I'm looking forward to exploring this with my 7 year old granddaughter who is already very interested in science.

I’ve found that introducing fun and wonder into learning has always allowed children to learn to a greater extent. How to be a Scientist does just that in a selection of cool science experiments that cover topics in the natural world, human body, chemistry, earth science, physics, and space. As I’ve come to expect from DK books, this book has attention grabbing sections and lots of photos. The book also includes a glossary of STEM terms that the child might not be familiar with. One of my favorite parts of this book is that among the more than 40 experiences listed in the book, it is exciting to learn science concepts using objects that they’re already familiar with. For example, it teaches about the Fibonacci sequence using pine cones, artichokes, and pineapples. I wish they would have added a comprehensive list of supplies for each section. However, I do like that most of the items needed are easily accessible. I think this is good book for some hand-on science learning.I received an advance reading copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I was not obligated to write a positive review.

This is a great book for helping kids explore the 'why' of the world. It's basically just a series of experiments, done almost entirely with easy to find materials that you probably have already, to help kids understand the world around them. It also helps kids figure out which questions to ask (sometimes the question leads to the experiment, sometimes the experiment leads to the question).I wish i'd had this a year ago, as my child's class required each kid to bring in easy-to-do experiments to share with the class. Instead of scrambling around all over the internet trying to find ones that were age-appropriate, easy to put together, and within his ability to run and explain, i could have just picked almost any page out of this book.

This hymnal first caught my eye with hymns by Fred Pratt Green and Brian Jeffrey Leach. As I examined it more closely, I found quite a few inclusive, gender-neutral changes of words in familiar hymns. As well, 184 of its 845 numbered selections are prayers, scriptures, prayers or responsive readings, so that the hymnal is not as rich in musical resources as first appears. These readings, however, represent a wealth and variety of Christian authors. Both readings and hymns are well-indexed. With the possible exception of the fancy typeface used for hymn titles, it is an attractive and well-made book.

Great!

Contains a wide variety of hymns in playable versions.

Exactly what I needed!

Great book.

I bought this hymnal for a friend who is a pianest and wanted a copy of our church hymnal Since it was printed many years ago it was not easy to find in local book store What joy it brought to her and the price was great for a new copy

So many wonderful hymns that I didn't even realize that I knew. Doctrinally sound lyrics. Beautiful melodies.

A good hymn collection.

#3,041,351 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I have a very large collection of books on architecture and this one is among my most treasured. Everything about the book, from the understated book design, to the sublime architecture of Clark and Menefee to W.G.Clark's elegant essay makes this book a standout and a keeper. Unfortunately I somehow I lost my copy a few years ago and the book is now long out of print. I can't bring myself to spend ±$400 for a used copy so I send out this plea to the publisher to reprint this classic.

This is a small, exciting, book that packs in big ideas. To paraphrase Mr. Clark, building rises to the level of "architecture" when it atones for the loss nature suffers through human intervention by replacing nature with something that can be seen as beautiful and necessary...Anything short of this high standard is "only building." This book, then, explains and illustrates the architecture of Clark and Menefee through fifteen projects (a few unbuilt) which were undertaken before the firm dissolved in 1999.The layout of the book is beautiful. Floor plans are included as well as architectural drawings. There is one quibble: all of the photos are black and white. This makes the book very much in vogue with what is perceived as "high art" - but the wonderful color photo on the jacket makes one hungry for more.

A well designed and beautiful book of the competitions and completed built work of this well known firm. The text is readable and thoughtful, and superb and restrained graphics accompany numerous black and white photographs of many private houses closed to the public.
