About the Author

Muso Soseki: Born ten years after Dante, in 1275, Muso Soseki was the most famous Zen monk of his time, and is considered the father of the rock garden. Muso began studying Buddhism at the age of six, and he spent much of his early life practicing Zen in remote temples and hermitages. In spite of this isolation, Muso’s reputation grew, and he served as an advisor and teacher to several emperors, as well as to more than 13,000 students, over the course of his lifetime. In his old age, Muso again withdrew from court life and devoted himself to the study of Buddha dharma, spending much of his time cultivating the Zen gardens for which he is best known. Muso died in 1351, leaving behind numerous gardens and an enormous body of poetry and prose. In honor of his influence over Japanese politics and culture, Muso was posthumously renamed Muso Kokushi, or national Zen teacher, by the Japanese Emperor Go-Daigo.W.S. Merwin: W.S. Merwin, U.S. Poet Laureate from 2010–11, won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry twice, most recently for The Shadow of Sirius (Copper Canyon, 2009), and the National Book Award for Migration: New and Selected Poems (Copper Canyon, 2005). Author and translator of over fifty books, Mr. Merwin lives in Hawaii and France.Soiku Shigematsu : Soiku Shigematsu is a Zen scholar, poet, and translator. His past translations include A Zen Forest: Sayings of the Masters and A Zen Harvest: Japanese Folk Zen Sayings. Shigematsu has been honored with the Jerome J. Shestack Poetry Prize from The American Poetry Review. In addition to his work as a translator, Shigematsu writes free-verse poetry in Japanese. He has also taught at Shizuoka University, San Diego State University, UC Davis, and Kansai Medical University. Simegatsu now serves as the abbot of Shogen-ji Temple in Shimizu, Japan.

This is one of the clearest books of Zen poetry I've read. It is meditation, fantasy, reflection and part-biography of a man who lived at the same time as Dante. This volume expands on the selections Mr. Merwin chose for East Window to which I have turned many times over the last five or so years. I don't know how one "translates" these ancient texts, but Mr. Merwin and Mr. Shigematsu make the selections read as if they were composed yesterday. A wonderful volume.

A beautiful book, thank heavens it's back in print. The introduction opens the volume nicely. Each poem is like a painting, full of such depth it can be viewed over and over to appreciate its depth.

These poems and letters make it clear why Muso Soseki was 'Teacher to Seven Emperors'.

Muso Soseki, also known as Muso Kokushi, was a thirteenth-century Zen roshi, the first great designer of the Japanese rock garden, and a poet of startling immediacy and attractive spirit. His work mixes the paradoxical directness of Zen convention with a great expansiveness of feeling: the poems manage to be both wise and delightful. He too has been fortunate in his translator: W.S. Merwin, working with Soiku Shigematsu, has cast Muso's verse in Williams-inspired triadic stanzas, and it works beautifully. Read SUN AT MIDNIGHT: Poems and Sermons by Muso Soseki (North Point Press). For more of his prose, DREAM CONVERSATIONS: On Buddhism and Zen (as by Muso Kokushi) is published by Shambhala, translated by Thomas Cleary. Muso's poems are included in EAST WINDOW (Copper Canyon Press), a collection of W. S. Merwin's Asian translations, which is full of good things. A rather dry but informative essay on Muso is in Heinrich Dumoulin's (rather dry but informative) ZEN BUDDHISM: A HISTORY, VOLUME 2: JAPAN (Macmillan, 1990).Glenn Shea, from Glenn's Book Notes, at www.bookbarnniantic.com

I purchased the North Point Press edition of these poems in the early 1990's mostly for the sermons contained at the end of the book. At that point in my life, I was not much of a poetry reader and had little interest in the art form. After receiving the book in the mail, I flipped through it and decided to read it on the upcoming weekend when a fraction of peace would enter a very busy life. Starting at the beginning of the book, I read each poem and found some glint of insight or empathic resonance in almost every poem. This was the first book of poems I read from cover to cover and enjoyed. I have kept this book with me for many years now. It holds a special place in my growing collection of Asian poetry. And as you can guess, I highly recommend it.

A collection of of introspective observations, and musing of a life well lived in the True Way.I felt as though I was there at His experiences. An overall sublime retrospective with a calmingatmosphere. More Poetic than an intense teachingor Koan filled cuplets.Muso Soseki was a Giant among hearts.

Review

"In a day where religion-or, rather arguments over religion-divide us into ever more entrenched and frustrated camps, Krista Tippett is exactly the measured, balanced commentator we need." -Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love "Tippett's prose is lyrical and profound; her arguments should move the secularist and the dogmatist alike to a new vision of peace." -Andrew Solomon, author of The Noonday Demon

Krista Tippett is interesting, informed, and quite amazing on the subject of religion. She's very quotable. This is not quite a casual read-- it's deep and I found it deeply satisfying. Tippett's approach is interfaith. She speaks of Christianity, but she also speaks of other faiths and of the human quest for meaning. This is less a conversation from within the confines of religion's structures than it is a sophisticated exploration of the ways people experience faith and spirituality-- what we think we are experiencing, and what we think we know. Here's a sample: "[W]e can't compare faith flatly to reason and declare it intellectually inferior. Its territory is the drama of human life, where art is more precise than science, where ideas are lived and breathed."

The paperback edition of the book that I had ordered included an excellent discussion guide, etc. The cover picture shown on your site was of that specific editioHowever, when I received the two copies I had ordered, it was not of that edition, not of the book that you have pictured on your site. Very, very disappointing. I returned the two books. You re-embursed the money. I would much rather that you had sought the correct edition and sent me that. I hope the selling of editions other than the ones pictured or described is not something that happens with any kind of frequency, either with books, CDs or DVDs. This is the first time it has happened for me. The book itself is extraordinary. I found the harcover in a sale bin and thought it was a collection of her interviews on NPR. But it is her memoir, her own faith development - filled with thought provoking, faith enriching and spirit stirring insights. Beautifully written and definitely motivating the reader to go one his/her own spiritual journey. Her analysis of power and influence of religion, especially fundamentalism, gives great understanding of what is happening in our world today. And even more, may help individuals understand their own knee-jerk reactions to their own ungospel-like attitudes of exclusion, rather than inclusion. For me the book holds wisdom that deserves a wide readership. And that is why I buy many copies to give to friends, and to encourage people in church ministry to use as a guide in faith/ministry/awareness expansion. I myself am a Catholic priest - and I felt the Holy Spirit's "ru'ah" upon me the whole time I was reading this book.

Krista Tippets has a unique, loving and nonjudgemental approach to people of all religions. This book is both biographical and reflective of the wonderful interviews Krista does on Speaking of Faith, a public radio program on spirituality. Krista has developed an inclusive, thoughtul, humorous and loving approach to interviewing great spiritual leaders and scholars of all faiths, which details the individual nature of human spirituality. Krista looks for common ground with other seekers, providing a refreshing alternative to religious stereotypes that classify, generalize, and pass judgement on the spirituality of other cultures. Krista' changed from a bright, international political negotiator, without an active faith, to a divinity student 2 years later. Krista now is a professor of religion and has developed an unusual ability to make people feel comfortable talking about their spiritual growth. I highly recommend this book for all who seek a deeper relationship with God, as it is fascinating and easy reading. I listen with fascination to Krista's 6 AM "Speaking of Faith" on MPBN each Sunday morning in Maine for inspiration.

Enjoyed this book immensely for many reasons. The transparency .........covering various religions and beliefs w/out attacking anyone. I felt I was alongside Krista as she was reliving her life experiences and so appreciated her ability to share her struggles, her victories and those wonderful people along the way she interviewed who also shared such wisdom around how we all need to walk the earth together not in tolerance but in unity! I will be reading this again as once is not enough to digest everything! I purposely purchased this on my Kindle so I wouldn't mark the book up! I will be purchasing a hard copy in hopes of getting some of my friends/family to read it!

Everyone has a unique life, but Krista Tippet has had opportunities way beyond the wildest dreams of most truth seekers. Her book chronicles a life rich in personal encounters with notable people from around the world. It is a long list. Not all of them are religious, but all are remarkable as unique spokespersons for some facet of that grand human attempt to make sense of things. This was my kind of book. I love to write in the margins, pose questions, add counter points etc.. It is not supposed to be a light or fun read. She is asking questions, hard questions that even the best and brightest of her guests struggle with. It is as others have suggested, an extended conversation. And it is a conversation that we can sit in on! My only regret is that I could not physically be there to ask my own questions or put in my 2 cents worth.Krista is no slouch herself. She was the perfect person to have all these opportunities. I hope she has the strength to continue these conversations. I worry a little that the shear weight of all the uncertainties and complexities she immerses herself in will take a toll. As she ends the book I can't tell if her glass is half full or half empty. But I know I desperately want to reach out to her and say, here are a few more pieces I have found to put in your glass.

Review

"Enough intrigue to satisfy every reader. . . . A fantastic debut!"-RT Book Reviews"Once you've had a bit, you can't wait for more."-OPRAH.com"Pryor's steady and engrossing debut combines Sherlockian puzzle solving with Eric Ambler-like spy intrigue. With a cast of characters you want to know better and a storyline cloaked in World War II betrayals…the author winningly blends contemporary crime with historical topics."-Library Journal Starred Review and Debut of the Month“[A] well-crafted debut novel. Mark Pryor creates a new hero full of intelligence and charm which mixes well with the ever twisting plot of the story. Each turn of the page is a new piece of the complex puzzle that readers will enjoy fitting together. A leaf out of a classic Agatha Christie novel, mixed with the modern world of crime, is a suspenseful adventure waiting to happen.” -Portland Book Review    “This is enjoyable French investigation in which Paris as seen through Hugo’s eyes comes to life. Hugo is a solid hero though his inquiry may make him persona non grata and expelled from France. Although the violent abductions and homicides are somewhat muted, the storyline is fast-paced from start to Hugo and Tom confronting their adversary who expects their visit.”-The Mystery Gazette"Stylish, suspenseful, and smart, Mark Pryor's The Bookseller conveys the reader expertly through a puzzle of missing Nazi hunters and drug deals. Fans of Alan Furst will find much to love. As strong and welcome as a hot coffee on a chilly Paris morning. Bibliophiles, Francophiles, and mystery addicts rejoice! The debut of Hugo Marston is one you don't want to miss."-Steven Sidor, author of Pitch Dark“It had everything I enjoy and more. Paris, books, intrique, thrills, Paris, twisted villians, passionate romance (it IS Paris after all), sinfully delicious foods, fascinating people, a hard driving storyline…. [Pryor] has a gift for describing scenes so perfectly that he makes the readers' senses come alive.” -MysteryNet.com  “A real page-turner. This is what thriller writers always aim to produce and so often fail to get right…. You can’t ask for better than this.” -San Francisco Book Review“This exciting and well-written novel is the first in a new series and I look forward to additional installments.... Congratulations, Mark Pryor. You've written a real gem!” -Suspense Magazine

This book had many interesting facets, especially the history of the bouquinistes and their history in Paris. It was interesting to read the descriptions of various parts of Paris. The flavor and descriptiveness gets the three stars. There were some things I did not care for. The writing was good in the descriptive passages but the dialogue was not very developed and was almost childish sometimes. The plot was not very good. There were big problems in this book. Why does Max say that it's a domestic issue when the other bouquiniste is being hit by the thug? What man watches another man hit an old woman? What big strapping man with a gun just watches his friend get kidnapped? And worst of all is the coincidence of Hugo meeting the woman in the cafe. Absolutely not believable. Hugo acts weird with his secretary - sort of curt and rude but then calls her at all hours for information as if she existed solely for his benefit. He puts people in danger with his thoughtlessness as if he had no experience at all. I found that to be ridiculous. The friend comes all the way to Paris to help him but his character is not really developed properly. There is too much drinking and subsequent hangovers for people of this age and maturity. Every time Hugo thinks he should do the right thing he talks himself out of it for fear of losing his job. That doesn't seem heroic and yet it seems as if Hugo is supposed to be a hero. But instead Hugo is disappointing and the book ends in an implausible way.If you are prepared to suspend disbelief more than usual you will not see the flaws in this book as much. It is a mostly pleasant outing if you are not looking too hard at plot and other elements.

The first Hugo Martin mystery series begins in Paris along the Seine among the booksellers who ply their trade in their green stalls at the river's edge. The books primary character, Hugo has a passion for wonderful books and his old friend Max, one of the city's beloved booksellers whose stall overlooks the Seine -- shares his passion. Soon after Hugo buys a couple first edition books, Max is set upon by thugs and kidnapped right in front of Hugo. But no one from the french police appears to believe that Max is missing. As the head of security for the American embassy in Paris and a former FBI agent, Hugo tries to personally unravel what has happened to Max and trips into a complex hornets' nest of trouble and intrigue in his Texas two-step cowboy boots. Along the way he meets the charming and beautiful Claudia, a French reporter and resurrects a friendship with his old colleague and buddy Tom who left the FBI for the CIA a couple of decades earlier. This team, with the help of a few others, begin the difficult task of finding Max. What they discover in the charing byways of Paris and countryside of France is a very disturbing new reality for the booksellers of the city. This story is a fast moving drama with plenty of intrigue and enjoyable twists and turns ---- and a fascinating backstory regarding an old Nazi hunter (Max) turned exposer of WWII French Nazi collaborators. An armchair traveler's enjoyable read with just enough spice, wit and daring to suck the eager mystery reader into the pages of this charming new series. I hope to see what Hugo is up to in a few more of these nicely written, contemporary mysteries.

This was a nice mystery read. It's well written. It's not classic literature and some of it is a little far fetched, however it's a great entertainment read. It's a love letter to Paris to be sure and anyone who has been there will appreciate how the author has captured its charm. If you're looking for a hard hitting Michael Connelly, Brad Thor or David Silva type thriller, this isn't it. It's not really meant to be. It's an interesting mystery set in Paris with interesting characters. I was throughly entertained and I'm looking forward to the other books in the series.

While this book, in my opinion, is not on a par with my favorite authors it does show good basics. The initial kidnapping of a supposedly good friend while he just stands by and does nothing is rather weak. The storyline bounces around a bit and I got some of the characters confused. All told I will go on to book 2 and give it one more chance to hook me on the series.

Purchased this as Whispersync through Book Gorilla.Forget the summary; it skews the timeline.Simply take Paris, American Embassy security chief on vacation,a good friend who is bookseller, rare books which are not what they seem, a reporter who is not what she seems, local cops who are not what they seem, an old friend who is CIA retired, and several murders. And be prepared to become addicted to Hugo Marsden's way of things (with plot twists).Michael Prichard does a fine job of differentiating characters and adding snark. My great disappointment is that there are no more of this series available on audio!

I truly enjoyed the flow of the words, the flow of the storyline, the intricate plot that keeps you guessing and all set in Paris with a dash of romance. I look forward to the next book!Nancy F.

I enjoyed The Bookseller for its window into Parisian life and for the background it provided of the bookstall owners. I've seen so many photographs of the bouquinistes, yet this is the first time I've read anything of their history. It was fascinating.Unfortunately, the rest of the book wasn't on par with its insights into Paris and one of its institutions. Having deduced what was happening to the booksellers and why very early on, I wondered how long it would take Hugo Marston to put the pieces together. Too long, as it happens. Moreover, Marston himself never really clicked as a main character for me, and neither did his friend Tom Green. Both have promise, but both lacked that indefinable spark that would bring them to life. Now that I've said all that, I will say that this is a promising debut mystery, and I am more than willing to give the next book in the series a try.

This is not actually black paper stock. It’s white paper that is printed black. Many of the pages have specks of white where the ink didn’t cover. This might be okay if you’re buying for a child to scribble on, but be aware if you need actual black paper. In the photos I’ve compared this paper to a piece of astrobrights eclipse black by Neenah paper which is actually black stock. I was trying to save myself some money buying this, but I’ll have to return it and get the astrobright anyway.

It has 108 pages, its black, its a sketchbook, and it doesn't fall apart. I like it for my application. NOTE: The paper material isn't actually black; it is white paper colored in a black pigment; there is a technical name for it but I don't know it.

The pages are faded and have white lines going horizontally across the paper. There is also white on the top right corner that is not supposed to be there. It looks like bad photo copied pages from a printer that was running out of ink.

Purchased as a gift for my 8 year old granddaughter to use with gel pens and her Spirograph. She LOVES using the black paper - it was a big hit!

White paper that has been covered with black. Low quality paper. Does not work with acrylic paint.

Just a little disappointed that glitter gel pens do not show up well on this. But otherwise the quality is good.

This is it. Great sketch book with good binding. I like.

My daughter loves to use it with her gel pens.

Semantics of Analogy: Rereading Cajetan's De Nominum Analogia, by Joshua P. Hochschild

Review

"Students of the Protestant Reformation may remember Cardinal Cajetan as Martin Luther's key opponent during a crucial early phase of the reformer's public career. . . . Joshua Hochschild's careful analysis of Cajetan's recondite defense of analogy late in the 15th century may yet once again challenge Protestants to become more self-conscious about how they speak about God, themselves, and the world in the early 21st century." (Books and Culture)"Hochschild's work is both readable and well argued and will no doubt expose Cajetan's writings to a wider audience. Moreover, this volume should appeal to scholars interested in semantics and philosophy of language, as well as those interested in religious language and the history of philosophy." (Journal of the History of Philosophy)"In his study of De nominum analogia, Hochschild sets out to do two things. First, he demolishes what he describes as an outdated paradigm concerning the interpretation of Cajetan's work. Second, Hochschild gives an explanation and what amounts to a paraphrase of Cajetan's distinctions and arguments in their order of presentation. . . . this book should certainly be read by Thomists, and by anyone who wants a readable account of what Cajetan actually said." An excellent, detailed account of Cajetan's theory of analogy. The subject matter is naturally complex and nuanced, but Hochschild steadily navigates the reader through the issues. In particular, this book is helpful in that it clarifies that Cajetan's treatment of analogy was primarily driven by logical and semantic concerns (rather than metaphysical concerns) in response to certain Scotist polemics. This is more a book on analogical reasoning itself than on the use of analogy in theology (though the content is certainly relevant to the latter issue).
