I'm new to tatting and have never worked with beads. I expected this book to have some sort of graphics with how-tos... this is not the case. It has some beautiful patterns of jewelry - earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and pendants, but not one section on how to do it. Like the other reviewer (at this time there is only one) said - this is not a how-to book - it is a pattern book. I also did not like that the choice of threads was limited to her promo - would like to see other thread options and see the jewelry done in other threads (not just the metallics). All that said - I'm glad I bought it - the pieces are beautiful and I can't wait to make some of them!

This book is for shuttle tatting but I can use it for needle tatting. I am new to tatting. I learned needle tatting on Youtube. I am ready to do more, but I don't have the knowledge. I ordered this book and it is fantastic. directions are clear so I can follow

This book is so inspiring you just want to grab it and begin right away. Tatting is a wonderful hobby. It catches the attention of everyone watching including gentlemen who remember the hypnotic movements made by their mothers and grandmothers during quiet time. If you are shy, waiting in a public place the graceful movements draw the attention of others as they wonder what you are doing and the gracefulness draws you to the hobby. Supplies are easy to carry along as you travel, in the doctors office and also when you are watching sports etc. I really recommend this. It fills spare time, gives you a sense of accomplishment. When finished you are left with gifts for yourself and others and you acquire lots of friends After tatting for 50 plus years I have no arthritis in my hands!

I enjoy tatting and I really wanted to like this book. The patterns are not difficult, simple tatting dominated by beads and more beads. There's not much here to interest an experienced tatter, just more of what you see on the cover. If I'd known that was the extent of it, I would not have purchased the book. I almost gave it two stars but that seemed harsh since someone else may think the designs are wonderful. They remind me of my grandmother's costume jewelry. I found more interesting and attractive tatted jewelry patterns online for free.

Great instructions and pretty pics but I wish it had more variety. I feel like the patterns are too similar. They are easy to follow, even for a beginner like me, especially if I use a needle to tatt, which is so much easier than a shuttle.

The book is presented using full-page closeups of the jewelry, sometimes using several pages just to show the jewelry. Whlie this is pretty, the print describing how to make the jewelry is tiny and hard to read. The shapes of the jewelry are not interesting enough to merit the many pages of large photos. All the beads in a piece seem to be the same size, which takes away from the interest of the shape. I think one could learn more from "Tatted Jewelry" by Marilee Rockley.

The designs are stunning. I can't wait to get started on some of these projects. This is one of the first tatting books I have purchased where I might make every design in it. The directions are clear and the pictures are amazing. I can't wait to get started.

Great designs. Had to re-read directions multiple times on patterns towards the end of the book. Not always clear. You must know how to tat and read patterns prior to getting this book.

Loved this

I read this book as a requirement for our school's 4th/5th grade reading bowl. It was a very interesting book.

A great story many recent immigrants who are raising their kids can relate to. Provides several opportunities to teach multiple perspectives and ways to teach young children how and why steroetyping is often wrong.

I found myself relating to both Margie and Lupe. The characters were well written and believable. I came from a different country as a young child and I still remember feeling as overwhelmed as Lupe.

Beautiful map of PVR, feels high quality allllmost laminated, like it would repel a light splash of water.

There are some bad reviews of this map but I have always trusted Guia Roji and I received map today. I know Puerto Vallarta. This map is excellent. You do not need to know Spanish at all to use it.

This map shows only the main roads and not the side streets, and is really not worth the effort of ordering. I stayed in a small villa in Las Playas (old Acapulco)next to John Wayne's old house do you think I could find the steet on the map. Don't answer!

Having themes is a nice idea, but there are a few things that could be improved: 1) level of difficulty in choices of words varies, to the extent that several adults were unable to figure out the correct word, 2) the puzzle is structured (often with only one letter shared by two words) so that sometimes it's impossible to determine the correct word. It was a bit frustrating for the children (who couldn't complete without adult assistance because of those structural problems - unclear clues) as well as the adults who had to deal with the same issues.

Did publisher even proofread this book. Incorrect spelling of words, i.e, happines. Clues very confusing for children and adults so children frustrated. Supposed to be fun not frustrating.

No thought seems to have been given to tailoring them to the ages described on the cover.

This was bought for a child interested in such things and he has enjoyed it immensely. It is printed on the cheapest pulp paper imaginable and does not have a lot of puzzles. In other words, it is half a book and a poor overall value. Kids' stuff is often the biggest ripoffs!!! Nevertheless, it is what he wanted and for that I am glad.

This is an excellent look into the future of technology, and how scientific progress should be done with ethics in mind. It is also a unique book with a format that I found to be very engaging. As can be ascertained from the title, the book uses science fiction movies to bring up science/technology related topics and discuss their implications and what the current state of science in the relevant fields are. This format has the advantage of giving a clear theme to each chapter, and makes every chapter self-contained. I suppose some readers may not like this format, but I thought it worked well and helped me focus on the topic at hand as well as introducing me to some fun sci-fi movies. The book is fun, covers topics neutrally and fairly, and is a nicely nuanced review of what could lie in our future.The following is just a part of the list of topics covered. DNA and our ability to possibly resurrect species (such as the mammoth) including the questions of how should we decide to use such technology. Cloning which, of course, brings out topics like who counts as a person/human, or more importantly, what does not count. Then how should we use our increasing powers of prediction when it comes to people's freedom (how worried should we be about Big Data?). What type of intelligence is important, how should intelligence enhancing technology be used, and what is the threat of AI. How should we worry about technology and societal inequality and the problem with worrying about exponential trends. What sort of things should we worry about with our ability to modify our environment through genetic, nanometer scale material manipulation, and computer code. It ends with a a good ending survey of how technology can be used in relation to global warming. In this last topic, I found a rather new look at the problem that I found persuasive about the role of technology that doesn't just focus on reducing our production of CO2 through less consumption.This is a broad range of topics, and so Maynard's ability to cover all the topics is impressive. In areas where I have some knowledge, his arguments and presentation have been outstanding. He should especially be given plaudits for covering each topic with a nice amount of skepticism. He emphasizes we should worry about plausible rather than simply imaginable technology, but also simply explains what is possible and why the natural evolution of these technologies may cause problems in the future.I would be surprised if you read the book and did not come away learning about some new technology or being introduced to a new dimension on possible future problems. As a bonus, I would recommend watching the movies. I did a mix of watching first and then reading chapters as well as reading first and found both enlightening.The end of the book is of special interest for scientists, as Maynard explains how scientists should think about advancing knowledge. They should keep in mind that society also has a stakeholder position, and so scientists need to remember that their technological achievements can have deleterious effects as well as positive ones. Talking with who is affected is important for the ethical advancement of science.I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in looking at the broad science and technology frontier or to those wanting to know what to worry about. This is an excellent volume that will fill in the gaps and make you think about how we are using our technical knowledge and capabilities.

My own research work touches upon risk perceptions related to nutrition (including food tech), so I am always interested in reading more on technological innovations and connect that to how humans view them. Dr. Maynard's book was actually a great "break" for me from the often complex texts I do read. His book is easy-to-digest and is wonderfully entertaining! Using sci-fi movies as a lens for thinking about current innovations is a great way to engage sci-fi enthusiats (like myself) yet explore the challenging implications that come with our advancements in science.I highly recommend Films from the Future for both sci-fi nerds & science enthusiasts (and, honestly, anyone who finds themselves questioning the costs & benefits of tech already at our fingertips). You will also end up watching and rewatching many of the sci-fi films out there with a whole new critical approach!

A highly readable treatment of how different new areas of technology show up in film. This book highlights the larger issues raised by new technologies in some of the best sci-fi and other films out there. You won't be disappointed!

Andrew Maynard clearly puts together strong arguments and makes you ask questions about how technology interacts with our lives. He does a great job of providing quick synopsis' of the films he describes, but to understand his arguments you clearly have to watch the moves. My only complaint is that he would provide visuals from the films, but he could have been limited by copyrights.

Films from the Future begins with the premise that science-fiction cinema has something important to say about the relationship between science and society. That underneath all the whizbang special effects, the psuedo-scientific technobabble, and two-dimensional characters, thinking about these stories can help us grapple with the impacts of real technologies, under a rubric of responsible innovation or risk innovation.To do this, Maynard has assembled a unique set of case studies. Some of the films are enduring futuristic blockbusters like Jurassic Park and Minority Report. Intellectual heavy hitters are represented by Ex Machina and Ghost In The Shell. The are truly obscure choices, like the 1951 Alec Guinness comedy The Man In The White Suit, and schlock like Inferno and Transcendence.At its best, the writing dances between the film in question, recent scientific developments which might make the film real, and Maynard's personal experience. He writes with real passion about his early career in the mechanics of atmospheric dust (more interesting than it sounds), about growing up in England and falling in love with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio play, and his current globe-hopping life as an technology ethicist and futurist. The problem is that all too frequently, Maynard makes a rhetorical leap that the reader has difficulty following. There's a real choppiness to a lot of the chapters that leave the book feeling stitched together, rather than a cohesive whole.More seriously, the advantage of narrative futurism and stories like these is that it allows us to examine a given issue from multiple perspectives. The validity of multiple viewpoints, including non-expert viewpoints, is at the root of the last four decades of science and technology studies scholarship, and responsible innovation as a policy argument. I wish I'd seen more of that multiplicity, because all too often the argument retreats to a stance that the protagonists of the films were arrogant and should have consulted more stakeholders. The story of the overweening scientist being punished for his unnatural pursuit of power is one of the oldest in science-fiction (see Faust and Frankenstein), and I hoped to see a more interesting take on that basic narrative in at least one of these essays. Instead, we have replaced God with public engagement workshops and faceless regulatory exercises.And two notes. If you have a choice, get the ebook version. The typography in my paper copy is notably cramped. And second, in the interest of disclosure, Andrew is a friend, I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, and I had some minor comments on one chapter.
