Firstly I would like to get a bit of unpleasantness out of the way. This novel, the first in a series of historical novels concerning the French monarchy. That means that for a person adept only in the English language, there will be many trials and challenges awaiting the reader involving pronouncing those lovely French names, titles, and terms. This difficulty in no way affects how I feel about the absorbing tale Maurice Druon has written. I take full responsibility for my linguistic shortcomings.Philip IV or Philip the Fair as he is commonly referred to is the titular character of the Iron King and I found him to be an intriguing character who is able to reveal to us a cold and sometimes cruel persona, but also a man capable of gentleness and caring. It is alluded to a few times in the book that he seems almost inhuman or otherworldly because of his statuesque demeanor and his icy, unblinking stare.Perhaps my favorite character in the story is Beatrice who is in service to Mahaut. Beatrice was not featured near enough in my opinion but I suppose that added to the mystery that surrounded her since her introduction. She seemed to know a thing or two about sorcery which automatically thrust her to the top of interesting characters for me. It's also the cavalier manner in which she acts, making her seem almost otherworldly as well.I could go on about each character and family involved in the story but I will conclude my review on a positive note: if you enjoy medieval tales of courtly intrigue and especially if you enjoy the Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R.R. Martin then the Iron King will be a welcome read. I look forward to the Strangled Queen and I anticipate my review for it to be posted quite soon.

The Iron King is terrific. So much historical fiction today is thinly disguised romance (the recent novels of Sharon Penman spring to mind). Maurice Druon doesn't make the mistake of romanticizing history. The Iron King is the pellucid tale of Phillip the Fair, who found France fractured like a medieval Humpty Dumpty and set about putting it back together again. Through sheer force of will and a combination of dastardly deeds he succeeds spectacularly.To achieve his goals Phillip needs money. What he doesn't have, the Knights Templar do, so he ruthlessly and single-mindedly goes about taking what isn't his. Recent historians have been kinder to Phillip, pointing out the Knights Templar who returned from the crusades brought with them Christian rituals foreign to western Europeans that could indeed seem heretical. A few have argued (unconvincingly, I think) Phillip regarded their destruction as his duty. Surely if so he would not have pilfered their coffers but given the money to Mother Church.Regardless, Druon doesn't indulge in simplistic interpretations. The Phillip he presents is something of an enigma and therefore it is up to the reader to determine just how venal and mendacious the French king was. My conclusion was, very. If one is know by the company one keeps, his ministers Marigny and Nogaret attest to his cruelty and selfishness. Either would have felt right at home in the Gestapo. Phillip's and their relentless persecution of Jews and Templars (15,000 by some accounts( belies a saintly temperament.I thoroughly enjoyed the author's of daughter Isabelle: cold, beautiful and seething with rage against a husband (Edward II of England) who has publicly shamed her with his infatuation for young men. I have always wondered how the three wives of Phillip's sons could have been so errantly stupid. Yet when you meet them and their husbands (particularly the heir Louis), it's not so surprising they would take lovers. Druon convincingly makes Isabelle their nemesis from bitterness and hate and their exposure and disgrace is very well done. There is also a delightful sorceress who likes to pretend the lover she's copulating with is actually the Devil. Only the French....Like Phillip, I pitied a France that had Louis in the wings as heir, and was hoping against history the famous (though certainly apocryphal) Grand Master's curse would fall one short. Alas, it was not to be. Phillip follows Boniface and Nogaret to the bowels of hell....or thereabouts. Can't wait to read The Strangled Queen.

This sets the stage for the rest of the series. Eminently readable, I especially enjoyed the author’s philosophical comments on human behavior. I only wish the author had other series. The tale of the destruction of the Knights Templar and the view that the curse of the dying leaders affected the French throne as well as the English lends an inevitability to history already known. The entire series is an excellent read, and the author is more historically accurate than most of the historical fiction genre.

First, I read Maurice Druon's epic in French a long, long, time ago. Won't say how long. I have also watched both French TV versions. This is French History put in a novel form. Maurice Druon very much stays with the facts and this may make for a slower book than most people want in an historical fiction. I love it. I said "Finally" because the only english versions of these books that are currently on sale are usually very old and very expensive. I have my French set that I can read but it is really nice to be able to sit with my Kindle and enjoy these books. Also, my husband is very excited since he does not read French and has wanted to read these books.I hope the next books become available soon. I hope we don't have to wait a year between books. I just wish they had made all the books available as one large Kindle book.If you like fact based historical fiction you will enjoy these books. So much is written about English history, especially the Tudors, that you may enjoy reading about a new part of history.

Not exactly Game of Thrones, but pretty absorbing nonetheless -- and you learn some history in the process. This series is a great read -- I am on Book III at present, and it's difficult to out down. It does help if you have some French language background in order to be able to mentally pronounce the many French names and locales; I have that background, but I can see how this might be a frustrating aspect for for others that do not.

This volume starts out explaining how stories for the films were developed from the earliest days. Chief topic is how the storyboard process was invented, which has been used by both animation and live action studios since. Early on Walt insisted on using images as opposed to text when developing the stories for films.Individual story men are then discussed and how they worked with each other in the story department. Walt Disney is first and foremost acknowledged as the master storyteller, which his colleagues and historians all agree on. Chief among the story personnel profiled are Ted Sears, Webb Smith, Pinto Colvig, Roy Williams, T. Hee, Carl Barks, Homer Brightman, Harry Reeves and many more.Renowned storyteller Bill Peet has a chapter solely devoted to him.The section on Pinto Colvig gives some insight on why he left the studio for a few years.It's interesting that some of the artists that were profiled in "Before The Animation Begins" are profiled again here (i.e. David Hall . There is some overlap with the concept art and story sketches as some of the artists worked in both capacities. Like Canemaker's previous entry, this one ends with the story department in the present day (at the time of publication)Practically every page is packed with story sketches which are so captivating and full of vitality. There are even entire pages filled with storyboards. This is one of the few Disney art books that has lots of great images and great text.Hopefully this will be brought back in print.The Story volume of the Disney Archive series makes a good compliment to this volume.

The author John Canemaker has provided great depth through his research and writing compared to the other book on storyboard that I have, Walt Disney Animation Studios The Archive Series: Story (Walt Disney Animation Archives).Published in 1999, the book takes a close look at the storytelling department of Disney, from where storyboards were created -- sketches on the floor of Webb Smith's office were pinned to the board for the first time. John Canemaker has loaded the book with lots of quotes from Walt Disney, the animators and story artists, providing insights into the storytelling process. The evolution of storyboards and their relevance are laid out to us, as each animated short gets progressively longer until full length movies were created.There are chapters on profiles of story artists and their work. The more famous ones include Bill Peet, Joe Ranft, Joe Grant, Chris Sanders, among many others. We're introduced to their personal style of storytelling, their characteristics and interaction with other artists. There are many interesting stories like how Walt would criticise storyboards so as to improve them, a process which was called "plussing", or how different artists would defend their boards against critiques from others.In addition to the commentary, the book's also filled with original storyboard scans from the library, photographs and paintings, all selected from their impressive archive from 1930s to the late 1990s.There's a lot to be learned from the book, highly recommended to animation fans, art students, Disney collectors and pop culture enthusiasts.(More pictures are available on my blog. It is excellent, huge and with obscure information about how it developed until today.However, if you are an animator or a filmaker and want to learn about how to make a good storyboard, this is not the book at all. That is really the true message in this review, since I know a lot of people will look forward to it in this way.As a history book it is just great, showing early disney scripts from walt himself, and recalling early anecdotes about the craft in the studio

This book arrived in prestine condition. It is a Christmas gift for my husband, so I had to peek inside to ensure it was something he would want. Boy is he going to really enjoy this book. The hardcover is nice and makes a great impression. Thanks again for the fast shipping and great condition.

We are privy in the world of Walt Disney and the people who put his ideas on paper only to have Walt think that they could be better than that.The book is filled with instances of Walt cursing-four letter words and all,when his Soryman ideas did not cut the mustard. Why should they since Walt "was his own best storyman." We get to meet the men that were up to par with Walt-T.Hee and Bill Peet. But these man could be considered Lucifer to Walt's Christian God-those who wish to be better than him or take his place would end in Hell, which in a sense they did. Finally, lets not forget the geniuses Walt himself dealt with-Salvador Dali and Orson Welles. If there was anyone that could top Disney himself ,it was Orson,as described by Walt Himself.

Many animators and students collect resource material from feature films, and storyboard examples are rare and treasured items. Philippa Gregory is the author of many New York Times bestselling novels, including The Other Boleyn Girl, and is a recognized authority on women’s history. She graduated from the University of Sussex and received a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, where she is a Regent. I used to regard Anne as a weak woman, sickly, and very submissive. I did wonder how she could possibly have allowed Richard to parade and favor his niece right in front of her, and now I understand. Once you really explore the emotions Anne probably felt in response to her life's events, her fate seems a natural consequence. Frustration, futility, and disenchantment are abound in this book- but not without heavy doses of hope and passion.

The Kingmaker's Daughter provides another viewpoint into the War of the Roses, this time via Richard Neville, Duke of Warwick's family. His two daughters, Isabel and Anne, were like many children of their time, used as political pawns to grasp power. The story follows the Duke's early fall from power when his puppet King Edward throws off his influence by jilting his arranged political marriage and instead marries Elizabeth Woodvile for love. Duke Richard then begins decades of espionage in an effort to obtain the throne via one of his daughters, with King Edward's brothers displaying varying levels of loyalty.After reading The White Queen, the story told from Elizabeth Woodville's perspective, it was interesting to read the same circumstances told again from Anne Neville's perspective. History requires a bit more filling in of blanks on Ms. Gregory's part for a meaty tale of the latter, but I did enjoy how her able storytelling made it possible to engender sympathy for both parties, though they were certainly competitors in the most vital sense. The novel keeps a good pace, and though it should not be used as a historical reference, as many details are changed or omitted to help with an engaging storyline, it was a riveting read. I highly recommending reading both novels, as one of the great pleasures I found was the sympathy I had for each character and their story.

WHAT I LIKED:What I liked the most was the really believable POV depicted throughout Anne Neville. The build up of her life and the experiences she had that lead her to be a Queen of England- it was well written, it was entertaining, and Anne Neville's view of history, especially around Richard her husband, is really refreshing.WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:Anne Neville and Isabelle Neville. I loved seeing the world through Anne's eyes, but I could not bring myself to like her or her sister Isabelle. With every page, I found myself more annoyed or frustrated with their characters.Maybe that was Philippa Gregory's goal- to make them more frustrating and unlikable next to the White Queen & Princess. I don't really know, but I do think this is worth the read at the end of the day. I give it 3/5 stars instead of 4/5 because even though it was well done, I found the overall read of this book more exhausting than energizing.

Here's the thing. I love history. A lot. I love when Philippa Gregory novels. A lot. The fact that her books are historical novels makes me nearly giddy. I might love Gregory's novels to the point I almost hate them just a little bit, too. The Kingmaker's Daughter was no exception.The Kingmaker's Daughter is the story of Anne Neville and her road to becoming queen. It starts when she is 8 years old and ends when she is 28. She starts off as her father's pawn, a way to move higher in importance by marrying her off to the best offer. Her father uses her to try and win back his power over the king after King Edward's (of the York side) wife and her family steal his influence away. She is married to Prince Edward of the Lancaster side as a way to buy a tie to the kingship. After her husband dies and the Lancaster line is officially ended, she loses nearly all her potential power and influence.It is at this moment she starts to make choices for herself. She knows there are very few options to gain independence for herself, so she takes the next best road and marries someone she cares a great deal for, and eventually loves. Richard. I never doubted for a second that they came to love each other. To begin with, it almost feels as though the marriage is one of purpose. She wants to leave the house of her sister and brother-in-law, and Richard wants access to the land, wealth, and power her name brings. But by the end of the novel, there was love there.The princes in the tower are touched upon, and yet nothing is definitively said about their fate. I like that Gregory doesn't try to take a side. She keeps that mystery going and I appreciate that.In the past 3 novels, I had come to form an opinion of Anne Neville and it wasn't the greatest. Even though I saw her as a product of those around her, I wasn't overly fond of her character in the last three books. However, when it's finally her turn to tell the story, I fell in love with her and started to despise characters I had loved previously.This is what I love most about The Cousins' War series. In one novel, a character is painted as horrible, but the next makes him or her lovable. There isn't one "villain" you can root against. They are all good and bad. Gregory has taken the stories we read in history books and made them into people. I can't get enough of it.The Kingmaker's Daughter is yet another brilliant addition to The Cousins' War series and I'm hopelessly upset I have to wait another year to hear Elizabeth of York's story.

I found The Kingmaker's Daughter to be an interesting look into the War of the Roses, showing the same events explored in The Red Queen and The White Queen from yet another perspective. However, whereas I feel that The Red Queen was at times too introspective and heavy-handed with character-driven plot, The Kingmaker's daughter falls to the other extreme. In The Other Boleyn Girl and The Boleyn Inheritance, Gregory did a masterful job of writing characters whose motivations and loyalties were deeply conflicted, and unclear even to the characters themselves. In The Kingmaker's Daughter, loyalties are equally messy, but without the same introspective quality, the characters come off as inconsistent instead of conflicted. Anne often seemed to change her mind about things in the middle of conversations, and while these changes would make sense if given the proper context of years of loyalty to one person or another, without context they seem almost flighty.In short, I did enjoy learning more about other players in the War of the Roses, but wish we had gotten to see more of Gregory's thoughts of what might have been going on inside the characters' heads!

Amid the straightforward, easy-to-understand practices are a plethora of insider notes, tips, tricks and warnings to help you make your podcast more professional, more popular, and more interesting. With the attached DVD you get some extra training, some basic tools to use, and some sample files to work with. The book is well organized, comprehensive, and chock full of knowledge. It's a must for those who have a Podcast, and want to bring it to the next level.

i bought several books on this topic and they did not explain anything as well as this book. it really is written for beginners so someone a little more advanced would want to buy another book. i love it and i am glad i bought it.

I'm not sure what is happening with podcasting these days, but when I bought this a few years back, it contained all of the information I needed to begin creating and posting my own podcasts. Easy to follow and easy to understand. These "dummies" books always seem to do well!

Out of the five books on podcasting I ordered, this book had exactly what I needed, the PROCEEDURES and PRACTICES to actually put a podcast together. (The NPR podcast book is also excellent.) If you are hesitant about buying a "dummies" book, don't be. Well worth the money.

For those brave enough to try podcasting after reading "Podcasting for Dummies", this book will be your "Bible" for what comes next. It's loaded with tricks and I use it as a reference all the time. It's also aupported by a pocast. High recommended.

This was one of the books that led me into podcasting, along with its predecessor, and the authors do a great job covering the basics. The book, and its companion podcasts, are often referred to when I have a question about mics, mixers, setting levels, editing software and using Wordpress. Highly recommended, not just for beginners, but anyone using podcasting as a hobby or a profession. This is the most profound guitar book you will ever read. It is less than 50 pages and will keep you busy the rest of your life. Joe teaches you to learn the guitar instead of simply memorizing trivia and movements.This is a compilation of magazine articles that Joe wrote in the late 1980s. Each article is a lesson on how to approach some aspect of learning the guitar and developing technique.

This book does have a lot of excellent exercises, but what makes this book really great is the fact that some of the "lessons" go more into things like music theory and getting to know the fretboard inside and out. There are many sections that are intended to help you know more about your guitar and how to get it to do what you want it to do rather than just learning scales and picking exercises.Overall this is an excellent book for guitarists who want to understand the best ways to really get to know their instrument and to improve playing as well.

This short but sweet book is a compilation of all of Joe's columns from the classic Guitar For The Practicing Musician magazine. Most of the lessons are nice and short but contain great exercises and ideas from this master teacher who taught Steve Vai, Alex Skolnick and Kirk Hammett. I like the fact that you do not need to go through the book in order. You can simply open it to any page and grab a cool concept to work on. This is so reasonably priced you would be foolish not to grab it. Whether you are an intermediate or advanced player you will find something to spur your musical creativity.

Joe Satriani is a truly a great guitarist. He’s also a great guitar teacher and this book shows that side of him nicely. Whether you’re looking for something simple to learn or wanting to dig into more complex playing techniques this little book will have something for you. I particularly liked that I didn’t have to go through it in a certain order, rather I could pick and choose according to my particular desires at any given time. Well worth the price!

"Guitar Secrets" by Joe Satriani, is a great collection of exercises, tips and techniques from a series of articles he wrote for one of the guitar magazines a few years ago.Inside this little book you will find: helpful scale, chord and improvisation exercises, along with tips for improving dexterity, better understanding the fretboard, and getting the most out of your practice and playing time.For those who may not be familiar with Joe- he taught some of the great rock guitarists of our time including Steve Vai, and even the lead guitarist from Metallica. Joe's mastery of the instrument, and innovative techniques are incredible! Get this book and work the exercises into your practice routine. You'll be glad that you did!Also, be sure to pick up some of Joe's CDs and DVDs. To see the master in action, and get a great behind the scenes tour of Joe's stage set-up, effects pedals, and guitars check out "Live in San Francisco" available on DVD and CD. My personal favs from his CDs are "Crystal Planet" and one of his early CDs- "Surfing With the Alien". Listen to "Satch Boogie" or "Surfing with the Alien"- it will rock your socks off!!

This book is great for guitarists that are looking for a way to see the guitar differently. This book contains plenty of good exercises as you would expect it to, but the real value is far beyond that. The real value in my opinion is how he manages to open up the fretboard in ways you would never imagine beforehand. Do you know all of your modes up and down the neck? This book will show you how to connect arpeggios through all those finger patterns that have become stale over the years. There are great exercises are how to look are harmonies, modal soloing, articulations, and so on. This book has truly helped me open up in a more creative way than any other guitar book that I own. I would definitely recommend purchasing this if you are on the fence about it.
