About the Author

Eugene Bardach has been teaching graduate-level policy analysis workshop classes since 1973 at the Goldman School of Public Policy, University of California, Berkeley, in which time he has coached some 500 projects. He is a broadly based political scientist with wide-ranging teaching and research interests. His focus is primarily on policy implementation and public management, and most recently on problems of facilitating better interorganizational collaboration in service delivery (e.g., in human services, environmental enforcement, fire prevention, and habitat preservation). He also maintains an interest in problems of homeland defense, regulatory program design and execution, particularly in areas of health, safety, consumer protection, and equal opportunity. Bardach has developed novel teaching methods and materials at Berkeley, has directed and taught in residentially based training programs for higher-level public managers, and has worked for the Office of Policy Analysis at the US Department of Interior. He is the recipient of the 1998 Donald T. Campbell Award of the Policy Studies Organization for creative contribution to the methodology of policy analysis, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. This book is based on his experience teaching students the principles of policy analysis and then helping them to execute their project work.

This is also a very good, easy to read and easy to apply book. I did my practicum in the U.N and developed couple of policy documents and I found this book very helpful in writing the policy document. It gave me a step by step guide from collecting evidences, reviewing them and organizing my review and to do table talk / focus group discussions and consensus building meetings on policy recommendations. I did write the policy document and it was approved. I am happy that I have this book and I will keep it with me for my future endeavors in my public health career.

The book will be very useful for students who have never studied public policy and who have never never written a public policy proposal. The book is clearly written and concise. It contains a sample proposal and also covers the important topic of not-for-profit organizations. As the title indicates, the book has a focus on the practical, which is comforting to students who may feel lost in the complex world of policy analysis and development.

The book was required for Public Policy 304W: Public Policy Analysis, at Pennsylvania State University. Bardach develops his eight step path to public policy analysis. He further details the need to sell analysis by building consensus and support. Some concepts may be strange to the aspiring analyst in that Bardach sees a role for the analyst as not simply a disinterested observer performing a passionless critique, but rather as an advocate for the policy and proposals the analyst advances.

I used this text for a policy development class and it provides excellent advice. How to construct a concise and convincing document that gets to the point is not as easy as it sounds. The assignment was to write a policy recommendation on a complex issue on two pages or less. This book helped me get an "A" for the course. Highly Recommended

It chronicles the growth and operations of this parastatal, extractive enterprise and industrial behemoth.The state of Arabia in the first decades of the 20th century, was so poor and under developed that the King of Saudi Arabia’s wealth and that of the realm, was kept in gold coins, cash, and other precious metals. It all fitted into chests that Finance Minister Sulaiman reportedly stored in his family home. These funds were needed to be distributed among the king’s subjects in politically expedient ways so as to ensure the continued loyalty from nomadic and settled tribesmen.What is today Saudi Aramco, started as a Saudi Arabian concession to drill for oil, granted to an American company under the name ‘Arabian American Company’ – Aramco.It began as a huge gamble. Previous geological surveys for signs of petroleum deposits in the Arabian Peninsula were disappointing but not conclusively negative. Oil had already been discovered in Iran in the early 1900s by the later named BP, and later in small quantities in Bahrain.The Saudi king at the time was so sceptical that oil would be found, that he asked the engineers and geologists who would be surveying the concession area, to let him know if they found any underground water cisterns that could be useful to his people.Several years and $10 million later revealed nothing of commercial value. In 1938, the team in Arabia decided to deepen one of the ‘dry’ wells by another two hundred feet, and found oil. By 1940, about 20,000 barrels of oil per day were being produced and the company had begun building housing and offices in Dhahran on the west coast of Saudi Arabia.With the end of World War II, the demand for petrol remained as high as during the war. Not only was Western Europe rebuilding its devastated cities, but the American military presence around the world necessitated consistently available petroleum products. Aramco increased oil production to over 200,000 barrels per day in 1947.The economics of oil had to be managed. If oil prices spiralled upward quickly, it could damage the economies into which the oil needed to be sold. At the same time, the luxuries of modernity were needed and wanted by Saudi royalty for themselves, and for the country. The oil finds were superbly managed so they produced vast amounts of money for the company, and the Saudi treasury.Over time, the kingdom was able to leverage its assets to obtain the best from around the world, in a wide variety of domestic developments and enterprises. This wealth enabled Saudi Arabia to spend lavishly and quickly on its building programme - the development of modern cities, airports, hotels, universities and other amenities, that catapulted large parts of the country into modernity.What Saudi Arabia realized it did have, was an immense quantity of a very desirable resource: petroleum. What it lacked, was the many resources needed to get the most out of this oil wealth. Perhaps the most obvious lesson to any country was this realization: they needed to buy what they did not have from the outside, and then to make it their own. And this theme runs through their modern economic history.For the royal family, it meant sending princes abroad for education at the finest Western institutions like Princeton and Oxford. For Aramco, it initially meant encouraging Saudi workers to accept training as welders, carpenters, machine repairmen, and general workers. Later, it entailed sending promising young Saudis abroad to university to learn geology, petroleum engineering, logistics, and law.There was considerable pressure on the King to nationalize Saudi Arabia’s oil assets and Aramco. Mexico had nationalized their subsoil resources in 1917. Iran’s oil industry was nationalized in 1954, and Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal Company in 1956. Iraq, Iran and Libya, had nationalized the foreign oil company assets within their borders. All have fared poorly.But the Royal House of Saud blocked this nationalistic fervour, in favour of engaging their American partners for their business acumen and technical prowess. Eventually Aramco was purchased from the American company - purchased not taken - in what was described as an “amicable deal”, and the company was renamed Saudi Aramco. The board of directors named Ali al-Naimi as the company’s first Saudi CEO.al-Naimi is an example of the Aramco development process. Born into a desert Bedouin family, he benefited from an Aramco-sponsored university education. He returned to the company as an entry-level geologist, learned the oil business and corporate management, and rose to the very top.Managers at Aramco administered the company like an international, not local oil company, with the highest of international standards in every part of the business. This distinction has been the key to Aramco’s success.Aramco has been Saudi Arabia’s greatest source of revenue as well as innovation, and has taken its place among the great multinational energy companies of the world. I normally wouldn’t gravitate towards reading a book with this subject matter but I was intrigued given the recent buzz on the Saudi Aramco IPO. I was very pleasantly surprised to be completely absorbed. Ms. Wald’s history of Saudi Arabia and its energy strategy reads like a novel! You have to admire and root for a country with a long-term strategy for its economic future that is willing to sacrifice short-term profits to become even more prosperous in generations to come.

This was a easy-to-read, pretty good history of Aramco and Saudi and how the two have developed over the decades. There were times when the book was repetitive, there are some editing errors (and entire paragraph reprinted two pages later), and the author, at times, felt a bit of a pollyanna regarding the cutthroat treachery within the house of Al Saud and the country. Overall, it's worth the read.

Ellen has been working on this project for about a decade and it really shows. The book is really well done and comes at the perfect time with the Aramco IPO looming.

The author wrote the story in a very readable style and keeps you engaged all the time. However, I have noticed that the book requires further editing and few corrections as well as there are number of facts were missing from the stories covered in the book.

I wish I would have read this book sooner. Like the subtitle says, the goal of the book is to uncover what keeps us (black Christians and white Christians in particular) divided. I had already learned so much of what she was saying and felt like I just wanted MORE. But this book would be really good for someone who is just starting out on the journey and wants to know why we can’t all just get along.I think this is an important statement: “People can meet God within their cultural context but in order to follow God, they must cross into other cultures because that’s what Jesus did in the incarnation and on the cross.” (p. 21)And this: “In theory, we support the vision of a diverse, integrated and interdependent body of Christ, but we certainly don’t want to venture outside our neighborhoods to live the vision.” (p. 26)Lots of interesting social science experiments on how we view people “like us” vs. “others.”Christena is smart and funny (my favorite combo) with a true heart for gospel unity, and I hope and pray that church leaders and Christians across America read her words and take them to heart.

I agree with Christena Cleveland wholeheartedly, but there sure is alot of filler in this book. It would be stronger as a 25 page essay. If you want to read this book in an hour, read the first chapter, the end of chapter 8, and chapter 9. Otherwise, get the book she references at the beginning, Divided by Faith. It's a much stronger and more academic approach to this topic.

Great introduction to the social psychology of connection and disconnection / race and division in the Christian church. I found it interesting reading and thoroughly highlighted it, in the context of reading with other books on a similar theme. The author obviously knows her stuff, and her online presence in other areas is real and thought-provoking!My only regret is that -- while not dry and academic -- the book is still a bit too dense for me to recommend to friends with a more casual reading habit. I wish there were a lighter ('teen'?) version to get the same ideas across to those with less time or more casual readers!

This book should be mandatory reading. In a day of binary oppositional language such as black/white, you're with us or against us, male female, sacred secular, private public - Cleveland seeks to explain the challenges humans face in truly appreciating and valuing differences. Cleveland systematically walks us through robust discussions on:* Categorizing - and the resultant distortions* Categorizing - and its affect on our interactions with others* Group tendency towards identity and self esteem protection and the implications of this protection* The role of bias in boosting self-esteem* Cultural threats leading to hostile conflict* How culture clouds our judgmentCleveland introduces the theoretical discussion in an accessible way and then supports her discussion with examples that most can relate to. No trite easy answers are provided. Instead, Cleveland recognized the difficulty: "The work of reconciliation is often excruciating. . . we must do the difficult work of addressing our biases and blind spots" (pp. 156, 157). She proposes Four elements as needed for "positive crosscultural interaction: 1) working toward a larger goal; 2) creating equal status; 3) engaging in personal interaction; and 4) providing leadership." (p. 158). Cleveland offers an explanation and an opportunity for us to individually and collectively reflect, understand our habitual ways of behaving, and possibilities for a positive way forward. A truly wonderful book!Critiques:I would have titled this Disunity and then scoped it as a case study using the Christian community as a lens from which to illustrate. My fear is that this worthwhile, informative read will be dismissed by some due to the words "in Christ." It truly deserves a wide reading and conversation within communities regardless of faith tradition.Bibliography - I know I know, it's in the footnotes. I like a compiled bibliography where I can quickly scan and find additional books to read (and purchase on amazon.com....of course - LOL).

I really needed this book. As an African American I have generally done a lot of finger pointing at Caucasians without realizing my own contributions (and they are significant) to divisions in the body. With this book I can now focus my efforts on unity and to my part to honor Christ. What the author says is so on point and very easy to understand. If you are concerned with becoming the church Jesus has called us to be GET THIS BOOK!!!!

FAR TOO OFTEN, as followers of Christ, we make sense of our world in a compartmentalized way. In Disunity in Christ, Christena Cleveland attempts, with great success, to integrate thoughtful sociological reflection on human behavior with a theological matrix for making sense of our division through the lens of the biblical narrative. Christena has done the church a great service by giving us a theological language and imagination for things social scientists have been observing for a while.What is even better is that she weaves these things together in such a way that it is accessible to everyone. I find myself simultaneously in the classroom, in theological study, and deeply reflective in regards to my own complicity in the division that wreaks havoc on the church today.Christena is asking questions which, from my view, are some of the most critical questions facing the church today. One of the great themes of God's Kingdom is how God is bringing together a New Humanity Family as, through Jesus, he reconciles all things to himself and all of us to one another. Christena's work in Disunity in Christ is a great help to any church who sees its calling as living into the trajectory of God's Kingdom future...today.

This story is about an unusual friendship between young teenager Allie, and elderly recluse Bea. Allie's parents have been arrested for tax fraud, leaving Allie to fend for herself in the juvenile court system. When her life is threatened, Allie is forced to run away, where she encounters an even greater danger in the world of human trafficking. She decides her only option is to take her chances on the streets.Bea is in a situation where she finds herself homeless after falling for a telephone scam and losing almost everything she owns. Bea decides her only option is to pack her recliner chair and her cat into her van ands live that way, until she can decide another option. When Allie's and Bea's paths cross late one night, it is the beginning of an adventure that will change both of them, as they learn to break down barriers and trust each other on their journey northward along the California-Oregon-Washington coast. The scenery and events are so accurately described that the reader feels transported into the van right along with the main characters.This story would make a wonderful film! Highly recommended!

Be it teen, adult or grand adult this is a book for you.A feisty older woman meets her match with an even feistier teen.Hyde takes you into the lives of wealth and poor. Into the west coast of America. Its different wave worn glass beaches, rock formations and why, also into forest, and people Allie and Bea meet along the way.I didn’t want this book to end. It took me seven days to read because I didn’t want it to end. I could have read it in two being one adventure leads you into the next.This is Hyde at her best without a doubt. Kindness spreads all through these pages.My only hope is that people will read it and think about their own lives and days missing what’s important.

As usual, Catherine Ryan Hyde introduces you to characters, and you fall in love with them and their stories! She knows how to immerse you right into their lives, and you just follow along with Allie AndBea,mantilla you turn the final page.This is about an elderly widow thatbloses everything, as a result of an IRS scam, the same call that I receive, a few times a week. She goes off in her old delivery van, with her ancient cat Phyllis, unsure of her destination. She meets Allie, a 15 yr old girl, that had been thrown into the CPS system, running when she felt threatened and in danger. They head off, along the California coast, into Oregon and Washington, trying to stay ahead of those that are searching for Allie. CRH's descriptions of the beautiful coastline that she loves, made me want to return there too.This is a story of love, friendship and loss, of two strange bedfellows, just trying to reach a destination, while avoiding the pitfalls along the way. It's warm, funny and sad, and I loved it!

It started out promising but I soon began to feel that the author was using the various scenarios to preach about morality and I didn't like feeling manipulated. I stopped reading around page 70. I have read other books by CRH that I have liked but with this one the author seemed to have an agenda and devised characters to bring those messages to the fore.POSSIBLE SPOILER: The two main characters were not believable; Allie, at 15 years of age, is portrayed as some kind of sage. Bea is a curmudgeon who miraculously becomes not one through the relationship with the sage. All too pat and cliche for my taste.

I am so impressed by the way such timely and universal themes are woven through this truly classic tale for our times. These are two beautifully crafted permutations of the lives many, many Americans are leading today. A combination of facts and alternatives, and not a single "alternative fact" mars her sharing of these very believable character's stories. A compassionate pragmatist, CRH easily slips into the heart of each woman; age is no barrier to her clear perception, and she presents their feelings, beliefs (and assumptions) through a journey along the (upper) length of of a coast and together/alone into the uncertain future...This writer's sheer, fearless power to engage would propel you forward, even if empathy has seemingly forsaken you--and, in the end, you might find that you've somehow reconnected to a part of your self that has been shriveling in imagined isolation far too long.So many of us feel we live small and unimportant lives, yet the depth of our collective humanity (or lack thereof) is determined on a daily basis by the choices and actions of each and every one of us. Allie and Bea, along with all whose paths they cross, are gr8 representatives of 'everyday' people, particularly of the people who are all too often 'invisible' to those of us who currently dwell in a higher income bracket.This book may be an eye-opener for some, but for others it will come as a welcome breath of reality in lieu of the endlessly imitative novels that seem to encompass every genre BUT one that reflects any resemblance to the world as we experience it... Thank you, CRH, for sharing a sort of primer for life in contemporary America; literally, these are the type of choices many of us will face at some point. I served with Leo in 3/75, never in the same platoon but I spent time with his sister platoon down the hall. Who knew us big dumb Rangers could spell words much less write so well??? Lest We Forget is a great read that never lulled in its pace of either action or humor and made it pretty tough to put it down. Here's to making sure history doesn't forget us! Cheers.RLTW

I write a lot of reviews and also write pulp fiction.Therefore, my reading interests cover a wide rangeof genres. Military history/stories being near the top.I especially have a spot for Special Forces Medics.Since I have worked Government contracts training18 D's, (SF Medics).Lest We Forget, brought back many memories, on alllevels...Great characters, fast moving storyline, will keep thereader's interest.Some stories are repeated, but that is par for the coursewhen it comes to SF medic types.I see you laughing over there.You know what I am talking about...Good read, well worth the time.

This text provided an over view of the nearly two years of medical training a medic in The Regiment receives. However, I was disappointed by the lack of stories or anecdotes about the author's experiences during his training. Those experiences are what make the Ranger medic what they are: medical professionals who "show the world... a highly trained soldier." The other sections of the book which discuss RIP/RASP and deployment down range illustrate very well the struggle to "uphold the prestige [&] honor...of the Rangers." The author does well to implant into the mind of the reader the often contradictory moral decisions and "intestinal fortitude required to fight on" in the asymmetrical warfare of which the Global War on Terror (GWOT) consists.

This book is a quick read and very straightforward. As a former Special Operations soldier myself, the thing that stood out the most for me was the theme of brotherhood. I laughed out loud as Leo recounted tales of debauchery and fun with his fellow warrior brothers. Leo has the ability to tell a story so that you can imagine yourself standing along side the characters. Leo talks quite a bit about the lighter side of being a Special Operations soldier, but he also does not shy away from the hard stuff. His descriptions of combat and deployments shed an incredible light into what Special Operations veterans have been doing in the past decade for our country. Great read, read it it in two nights.

I loved this book is an understatement! When I started reading i couldn't put this book down! Leo is funny and so "in your face" with honesty and forthrightness. You immediately want to meet him and spend a day listening to him (i was gonna say have a beer with him but I couldn't hang with him, lol). I was drawn to this book by several things. First, I'm an Army vet from way back in peacetime 1983. I had the privilege of meeting and working with the 2\75th Rangers at Ft Lewis Wa. I was a brand new Transportation 2d Lt (don't hold that against me). They were remarkable soldiers to say the least! As a civilian now I was able to get my EMT-B license through work a few years ago. So I loved reading about his education and how he applied it. Nothing prepares you or gives you the in depth training like the military does. I highly respect all of our active duty service men and women and veterans and wish we could do more for them! It would be an honor to be able to know and have a friend like L. Jenkins. My best years were in the Army. Get this book, read it, you won't be disappointed. You'll laugh and cry and sit in amazement!

Let me start out by saying no real life hero wears a cape, ate from a silver spoon, or walks a straight line. Nor are they perfect. But in today's war, men like Leo are perfect for the heroism (as some might refer to it as in this country) required to complete the missions set before them by this Nations leaders. The opportunity to have read some of his experiences, good & bad, without "sugar coating", was humbling & another reminder to never complain about what I have to do in this uniform. Many will cast there stones at him for the things he has said in this book but I can guarantee that they themselves are far from perfect & would never be able to face the dangers & risks that he & these men have placed themselves in to protect our great nation. It was apparent he never did it for the thank you's, handshakes, or respect but it is well deserved & goes without request. Thank you Leonidas Jenkins. I'll always respect you for the type of leader & soldier you we're, the epitome of a Ranger Medic. There aren't enough words to describe my gratitude for men such as yourself. Keep doing what you do because it's damn fine living & no one can take away the accomplishments you have conquered & will conquer in the years to come.

I thought that I had a good idea of the life of the soldiers at war. I spent many years as a war correspondent photographerin Vietnam, Laos. I even got airborne training from the Vietnamese army to be able to join them in their combat and laterwhen the US were fully committed I was a lot in the field. This book with the detailed description of the making of a Medicand later his activities so well written and so full of the human side of the life of Jenkins besides the war activities is an eye openerand increases my respect for the soldier in the field.The details and then comments in all the situations make this book easy to read and feel the action.Too many of us do not realize what the US soldiers goes through. Wake up and salute

This book is fantastic. A short read, but very interesting. I get bothered by typo's and so a star was knocked off. I don't mean bad grammar as in "he won't steeeeel a tracktor, he drujk". But there were a few typo's here and there that I noticed, which would have been fixed if ran through a simple grammar/spell checker. But it was great nonetheless, and a book I'll be picking up again to read.

My daughter and I started off reading the Little House books together. We enjoyed them so much that we started looking for other books similar to them. We didn't realize that there were stories about other women in that family. We are thoroughly enjoying reading about all 5 generations of the family. While the books about Rose, Caroline, Charlotte and Martha are not quite as enjoyable as the original series, they are still a must read for any Little House fans. I would recommend them all.

Martha leaves the valley for the first time. She continues to be her spunky self, yet discovers that she's not THE Laird's daughter only that she's A Laird's daughter. It makes her think about whether she's thought of herself as being better than others. In reading these Martha books, you witness a girl who although born into money wants to be looked upon and treated no better or no worse than any other child. She wants to give to, learn from, and mingle with servants, their families, and everyone else in the valley. In this particular book, she's goes to Perth to visit with her sister Grisie. While enjoying her visit with Grisie, she finds it a challenge to deal with the servants and Grisie's father-in-law who don't want her there. She wants to "behave" as she's been told to do, but she also wants them to know that she has her own personality and didn't come 'out of a cookie cutter.' This, as with all of the series, is a Great Story.

Martha is Laura Ingalls Wilder's great-grandmother and the "Martha series" are the books about her life in Scotland. This one has her beginning to grow up and learn to be a young lady. This is a great series of books, as are the ones that cover her daughter (Charlotte) and granddaughter (Caroline, Laura's mother). Remember these are not written by Laura, so they're different from the original Little House books, but they are excellent little books showing the author's view of how the girls' lives went.

Collecting all the Little House books.

My daughter has already read the Laure Ingle Wilder series and loved them so much she wanted to read more from the series. I encourage it not because it is good to read (though it is), but also because I love the fact that I don't have to worry about inappropriate material in these books. They were shipped fast and well packaged. It was a winner all around.

In this fourth book in the Martha Years series, ten-year-old Martha journeys to the bustling city of Perth to visit her newly married sister Grisie.This is Martha′s first time beyond the familiar heather hills and this city on the River Tay is more exciting than she could have ever imagined!I loved reading all about Martha with my son and sad to see this series end, it will be interesting to read her daughters series but at the same time strange to skip ahead.You could definitely tell Martha is growing up and maturing in this book as there are several scenes that are a little scary for younger children.Overall I loved this book and this whole series. I loved learning about the Scottish culture and the superstitions they had. I fell in love with the characters and am very interested to see who follows her into her adult life in the book series about her daughter.I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars.

In "Beyond the Heather Hills", the young, adventurous Martha Morse, is taking a trip away from home for the first time in her life. The only land she's laid eyes on before is her father's land of Glencaraid... but she's about to discover that there's so much more of the world.I cherish the moment that Martha and her older sister Grisie locked eyes and bonded like never before. It's a beautiful scene. There's other such enjoyable moments in "Beyond the Heather Hills" -- lots of things to chuckle over, but quite a few solemn moments too. And through it all, there's the Scottish brogue to keep every single conversation SO riveting.Although these books are nice and lovely to enjoy, this one seemed to have a few grim scenes that could be perceived as a little scary for youngsters reading it alone. For example, while visiting her older sister, Martha stays in a room which once belonged to a girl that is sometimes referred to as "Dead Cora", and Martha is unsettled with the situation for a while (who wouldn't?). About half-way through, Martha witnesses a man having a seizure -- and it's a very dramatic event for her to experience.There's much Scottish folklore in these books, which colors the culture well. Anyone would learn much about Scotland. (This series isn't just for children to enjoy, you know!)If only there were more books in this series! It's still hard for me to believe I've read the last of the Martha set, and there's no more! (This probably just means I'll have to re-read the series one day, as Martha Morse is now a character very close to my own heart.)Already I miss Cook, Nannie and Hedgie (yes, that's the hedgehog), Grisie, Alisdair, Duncan and Robbie, Auld Mary, and I think Miss Crow too. Plus I have the most curious of feelings towards Lew Tucker, the blacksmith's son. If only I could see a peek into Martha's future!
