This book is hard to describe. Crockford mixes serious thought experiments with history and humorous commentary. Some of the chapters are very close studies of the implementation details of libraries that Crockford sketches in order to explain a concept to his readers. Other chapters are more cursory and amount to a grab bag of wisdom and witticisms about a particular topic. The chapters are thoughtfully arranged, but they can also be read in isolation. The corpus feels a bit like scripture, in that way. I know many engineers that would find this book too esoteric and unapproachable, but I know others that would find it very refreshing. We need more software books like this one.

Good fun read. But also incredibly insightful and clearly and understandably written. I love this book!

Incredible book, well structured, I’m loving the JS low level comparisons with other old languages. It's not for beginners and not too complex neither, def I’d recommend it to master on JS fundamentals & core!

The information is deep, deeply explored and clearly, entertainingly, concisely communicated. Douglas Crockford is also deeply opinionated and so therefore is this book, however, you may stand to gain more from reading this book if you don't agree with his opinions than if you do. There are many books on many things, not all of them are good and fewer are great. How Javascript Works it simply great.

Good book with many hugely valuable insights from a preeminent expert. Some parts, tho, come off as pretentious rant. I wish Crockford would have just bluntly suggested another paradigm shift for JavaScript, and perhaps even titled the book something like: ‘JavaScript: The Good Paradigm’.

Was so excited to see that Crockford has finally distilled his ideas down into a new book. The Good Parts literally inspired my career in web development, convincing me to choose Javascript as my first new language in years over .net, Java, Python and other popular options.I am only partway through this book but have already gotten 5 stars worth of content out of it. It's priced a little higher than many books, but I think the value easily supports this price point.

You’d never expect a book on JavaScript to be entertaining, but with Doug’s humor, knowledge of software languages, and excellent writing style, this book is thoroughly engaging.

This short book is an essential resource for those establishing an oral history program or beginning a research project in oral history. Neuenschwander supports the Oral History Association’s Principles and Best Practices and explains why some of them are so important. The book is aimed at preventing litigation that might arise from oral history interviews and raising ethical concerns about the conduct, storing, and use of oral history interviews. Neuenschwander reviews relevant case history. There is not much directly related to oral history—the main example of this is the subpoena of oral histories as part of a criminal investigation of activities during the Troubles in Northern Ireland as part of Boston College’s oral history project. The university was unable to resist turning over the interviews, despite assurances by the interviewers that the materials would be kept confidential. The interviews were not protected by press privilege, nor by a theoretical and related academic privilege. No archive privilege exists, either. Therefore, interviewers cannot legally or ethically guarantee confidentiality. Other topics discussed in the volume include copyright, deed of gift forms, defamation liability, online publication of interview materials, and Institutional Review Boards. Strongly recommended, as it raises legal and ethical issues that one might not otherwise consider.

i don't like this particular book because it is a poor reprint of a 1946 book... a number of the illustrations (and there are many) are illegible due to the poor reproduction...finding a better printing of this book would be rewarding, but i suppose what can you expect for a reprint? the content is dated, but useful and instructive for tooling and general principles - well written and understandable for the novicethat said, much better to buy a used one of these books - the price of a new reprint isn't worth it

I've been trying to go through this book for the past couple of weeks since getting it and this is what I can tell you from my experience so far...The first few chapters go over basics like what your work area should look like, be lit, what tools to use, how to use then BAM!!! The book goes right into how to take a watch apart. I like to understand something really well before I make an attempt at doing it which is what I tried to do with this book. I finally got frustrated when I got to the part of the book that started to explain how to take apart the balance wheel and how the escapement works. I couldn't get past a certain page after reading it five times. That's when it occurred to me that it might help me understand what I'm reading if I actually try to take apart a watch. So I gave it a go...Yes, that's how you can get the most out of this book. Sure, you can read all about "run to the banking" and the theory of how the escapement works but it won't sink in until you actually start taking a watch apart (it's akin to swimming, sure I can tell you how to swim freestyle but until you actually get into the water, you won't know how to kick properly and use your arms together). Yeah, I royally screwed-up the balance spring on the watch that I was taking apart but I learned a LOT in that hour with the help of the book than if I were to only read the book--or God forbid--I try to take a watch apart without any kind of guidance. So it's a "read the section a couple of times and then try to do it on a watch" type of approach that helped me.This book has a TON of information so try to not get dismayed/bogged down by it's detail. An example of this is how you can adjust the run to the banking by either bending pins (if that's how the watch is is designed) or by cutting away at the movement case and bending the remaining metal acting as a "pin" to either lengthen or shorten the run. In reality, when you're taking apart your first watch you're probably not going to be focusing on diagnosing a problem and figuring out what you need to do to repair the watch right away. I just don't know if everyone is necessarily trying to fix their first watch as much as they are trying to learn how a watch works and how the parts all fit/work together. So you have to know what to take in deeply and what you can casually read and use as reference later. A newbie with lots of enthusiasm can use this book but it won't be easy to follow.It's a great book with tons of information but I have to admit that I got another book that should be arriving today that has the term "beginner" in the title.

Let's start by saying that if you are looking for colorful high-resolution photographs or how to perform basic watch repair operations - this is not the book.Unless you are a certified watch repairer, this book will likely take you from a beginner level (or like me, from an online watch repair school grad) to the next level. You already need to know about the mechanisms and concepts of a mechanical watch to get the maximum benefit from this book. You may read sections several times, each time getting more insight and information.Every section of the book is really excellent. I reference the section on interpreting timegrapher results constantly... at least until it's all memorized and understood. I'm currently reading the chapter on the pallet fork and escape wheel for the third time and can see it's going to require another 2-3 times through it to fully appreciate all the subtleties.

Keep in mind that this book was first written in 1946 and additions made to it up until 1963. With that being said, this has got to be the complete encyclopedia of watch making at the time of writing it. The author, Donald E. Carle is no doubt an authority of horology. The language he uses is old British and a little hard to understand in places and some of the equipment and materials he advises are no longer available or have been found to be health hazards in today's world. This book contains a wealth of information, but unless you are a professional horologist and willing to invest 10's of thousands of dollars in tools and equipment it has more information than you will ever use. But it does contain everything and I mean everything that you could possibly want to know about vintage mechanical watches. I guess the author assumes that the reader already has considerable experience in watch repair by the layout of the book. It starts out discussing needed tools and then by chapter 3 it explains completely disassembling a wrist watch movement. The steps he uses are not what I would recommend. The first thing he suggests removing on the back of the movement is the balance wheel assembly, which in my opinion has got to be the most difficult part of watch disassembly of all. Unless you have an extreme amount of previous experience, you will permanently trash your watch by starting at this point. The balance wheel assembly is very delicate and easily damaged. In the time period this book was written replacement parts may have been readily available. That is not the case today. The majority of the parts for these vintage watches are no longer made in today's market place and finding a replacement part can in some cases be close to impossible. He does explain how to make or repair some parts of a watch, but without the specialized tools needed to do this, it would be impossible to do today and finding those specialized tools would be a difficult task in itself and very expensive. Overall, I would highly recommend this book if you want to learn extensive watch repair.

If you are interested in old mechanical watches, this is a fantastic book. Very detailed. It was published in the 40's I think, so it is not a current book, but the theory and lots of basic tips of how to work are very good. Excellent beginners book on older watch repair. He even tells you how to make some of the tools you will need. Should give you a good foundation in the process.

Lucy soon learns that all things are not easy to calculate. As a reader, I calculate a few important lessons from this must read middle grade novel.-Sometimes numbers aren’t all that matter.-No problem is unsolvable.-If you have a couple of friends who accept you for who you are, you are pretty lucky.

The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl has a unique premise. Lucy Callahan was struck by lightning at age eight, making her a math genius. Nana homeschools Lucy until she’s 12, when Lucy believes she’s ready for college. But Nana makes a deal. First Lucy must go to 7th grade at East Hamlin Middle School, make one new friend, do one activity, read one book (non-math textbook).Starting middle school is challenging enough, but Lucy also has OCD. Some of her symptoms are invisible (reciting the digits of pi in her head), while others aren’t (sitting and standing three times before being able to fully sit down, compulsive fear of germs and use of hand wipes).At an age when kids just want to fit in, Lucy knows she stands out. The mean girls call her a freak. A dreaded group project requires her to work with Windy, a friend, and Levi, a frenemy. It’s through this project that we see Lucy grow as she comes up with a plan – volunteering at a homeless animal shelter. This brilliant, hilarious, sensitive debut novel is one of the best books I have read, hands down—not one of the best kids’ books, but one of the best BOOKS. McAnulty has managed to take several emotionally charged topics—brain injury, animal welfare, and middle school, to name a few—and weave them into a heart-tugging tale of friendship, forgiveness, and growth. You can’t help but fall in love with spunky, stubborn Lucy and her wonderful Nana, or admire the friends Lucy makes, despite herself. And with Lucy’s fun, funny fascination with numbers, even the most mathematical-averse reader will come away from this book with a new appreciation for and understanding of complex numerical concepts (but they’ll never suspect, since this is accomplished with such a deft hand!).If I could give THE MISCALCULATIONS OF LIGHTNING GIRL ten stars, I would. Since I can’t, I will just have to keep telling all my teacher friends, kid friends, and friend friends about this book!

I bought this book for my 11-year-old granddaughter. She is a voracious reader, and enjoyed this book so much she read it at one sitting.Then her mother opened it up and also read it at one sitting.They told me I needed to read it. I started it late one evening, could not put it down, and finally finished it at 1:43 a.m.This author has written other books, but this was her best novel - about a girl who had been struck with lightning and became a mathematical genius with quirks. The book showed us how she managed to find friends and survive middle school in spite of all that. This is an excellent book for any child facing problems connecting with peers!

I'm just going to say it: I loved this book!It is the middle grade equivalent of ELEANOR OLIPHANT IS COMPLETELY FINE. (If you haven't read that one, get right on it.) Thanks to a lightning bolt, Lucy is smarter than your average 12 year-old (or 40-something year-old, for that matter), but her Nana insists she needs to experience real life in the form of middle school. While she might be able to hide her math prowess to fit it, it's much more difficult to hide her OCD. Seeing how the world looks through Lucy's eyes was wonderful and thought-provoking. Stacy McAnulty manages to shows such character growth without Lucy ever changing who she really is. Ultimately, it's a story about friendship, forgiveness, and accepting people even when they turn out to be different than your first impression. I was in a puddle of tears at the end.Bonus: This book makes learning a little something about math easy because you're not learning math, but rather learning about Lucy who loves math and sees it in everything.It says it's for ages 8-12, but I couldn't have loved it more.So, buy it for your upper elementary or middle school student, but I suggest you preread before they do it. You know, just to make sure it's a good read for them. ;-)

I wish I had gotten this book instead of the pearsonvue book.... I failed the exam with a 600 after rigorously studying the pearsonvue book. I bought this book today and I've already identified at least six exam questions I would have gotten correct if this was the book I had purchased(as these were not covered in pearsonvue.) This is overall the better buy and is in a way more digestible format than the pearson vue book as well. The exam 70-740 pearsonvue book was great, but the 741 and 742 are written in the most uninteresting manner.
