About the Author

Sebastien Gerard is a CEA LIST senior researcher in software engineering and computer science. He graduated in 1995 from ENSMA (the Superior School of Mechanics and Aeronautics in Poitiers, France) as a mechanical and aeronautics engineer, after which he obtained a doctorate in computer science in 2000. He is currently leading a research team of about 20 engineers at CEA LIST (an arm of the French Atomic Energy Agency, http://www-list.cea.fr/gb/index_gb.htm) within the LISE (Laboratory for Model-based Engineering of real-time and embedded (RT/E) systems). The principal objective of this research of this team is to achieve "correct-by-construction” design of RT/E systems from requirements to implementation”. Through his involvement in a numerous national and international research projects, Dr. Sebastien Gerard has worked with many industrial partners such as Peugeot Citroen, Airbus, ST Microelectronics, EADS, gaining extensive experience and insight into industrial problems and requirements. Dr. Sébastien Gérard is also deeply involved in various standardization activities, and is currently co-chairing both the UML 2 and MARTE (the UML extension for RT/E) standardization task forces. He is also core member of the European network of excellence, ArtistDesign (http://www.artist-embedded.org), where he is a prime on issues related to modeling and standardization. MARTE (Modeling and Analysis of Real-Time and Embedded Systems) is OMG’s language for model driven engineering of real-time and embedded systems (RTES). The specification was defined, documented, published in 2009 [http://www.omg.org/spec/MARTE/]. It has been the subject of extensive research with numerous research papers published in the academic literature. It has been applied to numerous case studies, and tool support is available.But until now, it has remained beyond the reach of most developers - mainly because available documentation only defined what MARTE is: its elements, attributes and structure. It did not describe how to use the language for typical design problems.This book is an excellent handbook that addresses common features of RTES, such as communication among concurrent processes, synchronization, resource contention, timing, execution platform options, and so on. Numerous, realistic examples illustrate how to represent design features with UML annotated with MARTE specifications. Both the design representation and the design analysis are covered. It is extremely well-written and easy to understand. A must-have for initial experiences with UML/MARTE and as a reference book thereafter. It is oriented more to software design issues and a Platform Independent Model. Sufficient details are provided for platform modeling without overly detailed platform implementation details. The authors are masters of the language: both were instrumental in MARTE’s evolution and technology transfer. This is the best resource I have found and I recommend it highly.

Brown's (Uncommon Traveler) lyrical narrative chronicles the life of Columcille, born to an Irish king in 521, and his passionate commitment to words and ideas. In penitence for the bloodshed, Columcille decided to exile himself from his homeland, and ended up on the Scottish island of Iona, and there founded a monastery. He and the other resident scribes there devoted themselves to transcribing manuscripts, creating books that were then "dispatched, like small boats on a dark and wild sea, to places where reading and writing had been forgotten or ignored." Like the work of his subject, Brown's account also sheds light on an intriguing individual of extraordinary accomplishment. Grade 3-6-A lyrical picture-book biography of Columcille, or St. Columba, an Irish monk of the sixth century. In an age in which books were a rarity and few people were literate, Columcille was "Prince, scribe, monk, [and] bard." Brown describes his subject's fascination with a rare book of Bible psalms and his secret vow to make an illegal copy. The High King declared that the duplicate manuscript was the property of the owner of the original, and a terrible battle ensued. Although Columcille's army won, the horror of the bloodshed that day caused him to vow to leave Ireland and cross the sea to Scotland. On the island of Iona, he and 12 followers established a monastery and set to work copying other books and illuminated manuscripts. This brief but fascinating story will appeal to bibliophiles and be useful for assignments on European saints and Celtic history. There is a helpful author's note, a sample Roman alphabet, and detailed sketches of bookmaking and a leather boat. The illustrations are soft double-page watercolors that create an impression of green countryside, wild waves, and the windswept shoreline. I got this book for my 1st and 2nd grade religious ed/First Holy Communion kids.At first, I was taken aback. The colors are kind of dark and rainy. It also focuses on Columcille (St Columba's - mid to late 500's A.D.) fight over a book that he had copied (i.e., a handwritten manuscript) that ended up in a clan war and a number of wounded and dead.However, after reading it a few times, I realized it was a really interesting approach to looking at sin and weakness. Columcille was given the death penalty by his bishop, but was given a reprieve through the support of another monk. Instead of doing something useless or dumb, Columcille exiled himself to nearby Scotland and ended up doing fabulous work, spreading Christianity, founding monasteries and churches, and functioning as a peacemaker among the Picts.I found that the kids really liked the story and were captivated by the illustrations.

Great book and inspiring. A good saint book to add to your collection. Easy to read and for the kids to understand.

Landing on the tiny Scottish island of Iona, he and his followers built a monastery and scriptorium where books were copied and scribes were trained. "Books were made and dispatched, like small boats on a dark and wild sea, to places where reading and writing had been forgotten or ignored. The books made colonies of learning, and people's minds, once dark with ignorance, were brightened." Mr Brown's poetic text is filled with imagery, is rich in history and drama and complemented by powerful and evocative artwork in quiet and subdued tones. Together word and art bring Columcille's inspiring story to life with passion and respect. Perfect for youngsters 8 and older, or as a read aloud for younger children, Across A Dark And Wild Sea includes an Author's Note to enhance and complete the story, the Unical alphabet used by scribes, and a bibliography. This is a rare and wonderful story celebrating books and learning, that shouldn't be missed. "Columcille, the man who loved books, helped the world love books. This is a nicely illustrated and written story about Ireland's Columcille, but the author left one very important point out--Columcille was a monk! That's right, a Christian leader in ancient Ireland. To read this book, one would only know he was a scholar & lover of books, but his claim to fame was as a religious man.

The only thing that I can add to the professional and reader reviews is that St. Columcille is also known as St. Columba. All the other reviews do a great job of describing this book.

This book was read as part of the Catholic Mosaic program with our kids. It happened to be read around the first week of school and the subject of being a scholar and how important books are to EVERYONE was highly appropriate. Definitely a keeper!

The storm-tossed watercolors on the pages of this book are the perfect illustrations for this biography.Columcille the man was a monk who fought to maintain the written word during the Dark Ages. This biography is quite well done, with a very good notes section at the back. Includes a bibliography and a demonstration of how to create Uncial calligraphy script.Great book.

I have every one of Lisa’s book and love them all!Just like the rest if them, I was so excited to receive this book!I listen to the Chew The Right Thing Podcast and when I heard them talking about some of the new recipes from this book I was starting my list of things to try!The book has so many easy to follow recipes with natural ingredients. There are beautiful pictures for each recipe as well which makes them more enticing!The way the book is broken down makes it super easy to follow & find what you are looking for.I have gone to the grocery store twice now and gotten ingredients for 7 recipes on my “try it now” list!The variety of foods is incredible! I am going to buy an instant pot just so I can try some of the IP recipes in the book.This morning I made the growing oatmeal bowl and it was so creamy and delicious! The single portion sizes are awesome! I could barely finish it and even 4 hours after eating I am still comfortably full. I promise you won’t go hungry!Buy this book! You won’t be sorry!

I was so excited to get the latest Hungry Girl cookbook. Simply 6 is ok, and there are recipes that I will make....but it’s not as many as I make from Lisa’s Clean and Hungry Obsessed, which I cook from at least once a week.

I have been an HG fan since the early years and I really like this cookbook. The recipes are simple and approachable, and really take me back to the roots of the HG brand...making healthy eating EASY. I made the orange sunrise smoothie this morning and my 4 year old loved it.Other things I like about this cookbook:*The way it’s organized. Great to see a cookbook focused on recipes using few ingredients as too many books have become heavy on complicated recipes. Cooking at home, I am not going to get every deluxe spice or ingredient for one meal, so this is a welcome change.Great book for cooking simple and cooking well.

The recipes in this book all sound fabulous. I always put a little marker by the recipes I want to try in a new cook ok. However, I soon realized I was marking every recipe! I also love the bright white, high quality paper used to make this book. The type is nice and dark making it so easy to read. I love HG's recipes, emails and podcasts and I am so happy I ordered this book to get these great 6 ingredient recipes!

I love this book. I have every single one of her books and sometimes two!! Just when I think there can't be new recipes to be had, BAM here Lisa comes with another book. This book is packed with photos as we all know food is an eye appealing thing. Lisa and her staff of peeps are amazing individuals. I appreciate them trying recipes for the team. Thank you for eating the not so good stuff as I'm sure that exists as well. Thank you Lisa and Hungryland for helping me on my better eating/weight loss journey. ANDREW BEYER thoroughly revolutionized handicapping when he created his “Beyer Speed Figures,” a measure of how fast a horse has run in a given race, and an indispensable tool for horseplayers. Making the necessary calculations to develop a set of figures for each horse in each race was too time-consuming for most horseplayers, so in 1992 the Daily Racing Form commissioned Beyer and his associates to provide his speed figures for every horse competing in North America. Beyer has been a columnist for the Washington Post since 1978, and contributes regularly to the Daily Racing Form. He is considered one of the leading experts on horse racing.

One of my all time fav books is Beyers Picking Winners, Andrew Beyer created the speed ratings that everyone uses today, this book gives a ton of insight on the pace and how important that is to picking horses. Yes Class, Speed and other factors are touched on too, but this book is full of some great insight. Highly recommend

This is a follow up to the author's previous novel, Picking Winners. In this novel the author takes his methodology of analyzing a thoroughbred race to include the additional important factors of pace and trip handicapping. An excellent addition to the library of serious handicappers.

I've read each of Beyer's books and while he may not be the best handicapper he certainly is the best writer in the horse racing world. If I'm not mistaken he studied English Romance at Harvard and clearly took with him the skills to entertain a reader---no others even come close on the subject. Beyer's speed figures are constantly evolving and he teaches the reader how to consider trips and pace/track biases as an integral part of any speed figure. I don't have the time to watch many replays before I play a card but after reading this I certainly will scrutinze speed figures if they are the leading component of a bet I'm considering. While most of us don't watch replays as much as Beyer, this book convinced me its worth taking the time to look at more replays and take notes after watching each race.

Learned new ideas for handicapping the horses like more details with race replays and how to use an shorthand method when writing things down.

I feel like Beyer backtracks on his earlier books here. Gone is his optimism for new handicappers and it's replaced by pessimism. Aborted reading at the 2/3 mark.

Until reading this and other books by the author I never knew how complicated horse racing was. Now I know what data is important and where to find it. Hopefully when I go to the track now I'll have more success. The key is to always be observant and realize that any successful system you set up is always going to have to be tweaked in the future. The game is always changing and you have to stay on top of it.

One of the better handicapping books, Beyer, a great turf writer, goes into detail about some of his plays, excellent learning tool that touches on important things like Track Bias and Trip Handicapping.

If I could wave a magic wand and have every college administrator and professor in the world read just one book, this would be it. I've read hundreds of books and articles on learning science, disrupting higher education, and rapidly changing technological and economic realities. I don't think a book in this category has ever made me want to cry before. 'Building the Intentional University' evoked two strong contrasting emotions for me:1) Near-despair at the state of the broader higher ed landscape today. The book is packed with clear, concise, and potent information that creates a rock solid case for how and why higher ed is incredibly broken. It's undeniable that millions of students are investing record-levels of time and money only to come away unprepared to face the challenges of our increasingly complex society.2) Pure joy from understanding how a small group of extraordinary people with the right values and clear understanding of the deficiencies of a large-scale system came together with courage, vulnerability, rigor, and creativity to create a new institution that has, in just a few years, unequivocally demonstrated that alternate models higher ed can be orders of magnitude more effective, and at a lower cost to boot. Truly inspiring! I feel more hopeful than I have in years that real change is possible.The book is beautifully put together; organized into highly-readable chapters each touching on a different aspect of what and how Minerva teaches and how they intentionally built a new university for the 21st century from the ground up. Their clear goal is to create the wise and capable leaders and global citizens that the world desperately needs to build a better world. Their methodology is focused not on transferring content knowledge but on developing foundational concepts and habits of mind (ways of thinking critically and creatively that become automatic with practice) that will serve students for a lifetime. I can't recommend it highly enough.

We would all like to go to a premiere university, and yet there are so few of them and they are so hard to get into. Why aren't there more? This book describes a startup that has tried to create a brand new one, the Minerva Project. Within a few short years, the Minerva Project joined with an existing institution, obtained accreditation, built software (ALF) for small groups, hired academics in 7 main areas, and accepted thousands of students from around the world into an ongoing world class institution. How good it is you will have to see for yourself, but to me it looks remarkable. I am mostly interested in its use of technology, and there it is somewhat mundane, building on small group discussions and video. There seems to be little AI to analyze speech or text in real time, but a lot of video and polling and real teacher assessment and annotation. But perhaps the AI will come in the future. At least they log everyone's participation.It costs about a third what most other schools cost, because they have no sports teams or facilities. To me that is a plus. Instead they locate in many cities throughout the world with local students and computers. A great idea and implementation. Check it out if you are a grandparent or parent, and see if you want your offspring to go there. Seems great to me.

I love historical fiction--especially about the Holocaust and especially when I trust the scholarship behind it. I bought this book after hearing the author on the podcast, "Hebrew Voices." He was articulate and had an deep and thorough grasp of not only the Holocaust and the Cold War, but other aspects of Jewish and world history. Even though I subscribe to the tenet that life it too short to read anything but the classics (or at least best sellers), I thought I'd give it a try. I was not disappointed!The book is a page-turner. I originally planned to have this as my "pool" book -- so I'd always have a good read for a few hours each week at the neighborhood pool, but couldn't do it. I devoured the last half every chance I got. The main characters are endearing and memorable. The cultural and historical details are rich and authentic. The Author's notes and the References at the back of the book show the in-depth research that went into telling this story. Highly recommend this book to book-snobs like me.

We heard Peter Golden speak and immediately bought his book Nothing Is Forgotten. It grabbed my Attention from the start, and kept me reading away to the very end, convinced all the way it was a true story. It was that good and when I realized from what I read in the information that came after, I was sorry it was not a true story. But it was so good, and seemed so true to me that it will always feel as real as a story can be. So thank you Peter Golden for painting g a picture of WW 2, of people from young to. Old involved, for action on the part of so many from young to old, from love to hate, from saving lives To taking lives from Russia to Holland, France, to the U. S. Coast to coast. Highly recommend it to all.

Gripping story right from the beginning. Beautifully written love story which encompasses family history and travels through Russia, Paris and New Jersey. From a Don's Pizza Burger in NJ, to KGB and terror, it's a book I couldn't put down. The characters in this book became real, and I won't ever forget their story. One of the best books I've read in a long time!!

Nothing is Forgotten is the best of Golden's works thus far; it is a total "page turner". Jammed full of excitement, humor, tension and history this books keeps one up late at night as one reads to reach the conclusion. I have recommended it to my friends who enjoy history, suspense or reading about the hidden lives of those we think we know so very well.

The beginning was a little hard, but once the story begins I wanted to know what happened. You get to know the characters and care for them. There are surprises and stories that you know are deeper as the truth can elusive, as can love. This will make a great movie!

Read this novel in one sitting. Didn't really know the links between the Cold War and the Holocaust, or how long it took the world to come to grips with the tragedy. A fantastic read, and a stunning story of the peope who fought.

Peter golden’s book is historical and an engaging story with page turning anticipation and intrigue- emotion for and from the characters. Some of the twists and turns wowed me. I found myself wondering what I would do in each situation- ... the characters were relatable and some of the relationships enviable and real. Having grown up in that time golden made me think back to how I might have acted it reacted. It’s a story I will think about for a long time. A treasure. Sorry I finished it so quickly!
