Enjoyable texts. Love my Loebs and this is no exception. Would recommend Christopher B. Krebs’ “A Most Dangerous Book” to read with the “Germania” that’s in here.

Tacitus: The legend. One of the best in the Loeb Series. Highly recommend. Gives insight to Roman views of other cultures.

Quality & Service. Excellent; deserving the priceless works of art of "Germania." The book is the Thomas Jefferson used to base his Anglo Saxon history to justify Americans fight for "Ancient Liberties." Of all the Loeb Classics I own, this is the best!

I love Loeb Classical Library books, as the English is side by side with the Latin. It makes it easy to check my transations.

excellent book and resource

The Loeb (Harvard) Edition of this small hardcover volume is the best and contains all of the original Latin text next to the English text. Few people own a copy of this key work which was the first book ever written (97AD) about the Early Germanic Tribes.

an excilent history of englands govener

The Agricola and the Germania are the first works written by Cornelius Tacitus completed in 98 AD. Tacitus, a Roman senator and Governor of Asia 112-113 AD, is one of the best known historians of his era. The Agricola is a biography of the life of Gnaeus Julius Agricola, the Governor of Britain from 78-84 AD. Agricola seems to have had an illustrious career and had been a successful governor, but as Agricola's son-in-law, Tacitus is a biased source. The Germania describes the characteristics of the various German tribes. Tacitus is unlikely to have visited the tribes himself so his information is most likely based on the research of others and hearsay. While his reliability is sometimes questionable, these are some of the earliest descriptions of Britons and Germans that we have and of historical value. You also get some insight into the administration of Roman Britain and the pacification of the Britons. The Agricola and the Germania are both sprinkled with Tacitus's commentary on Rome. Tacitus has a low opinion of the current state of Roman society. He frequently admires the unspoiled qualities of the barbarians as compared to his morally questionable countrymen. Tacitus's style and flair make these works easy to read, even amusing at times.

Dr. Anderson provides a wonderful story told not only sequentially but also addresses the vertical issues faced and overcome by the Jubilee Singers. They were conceived out of financial need but were birthed by the prayer of George Leonard White, the treasurer at Fisk University. White formed and led the singers although he himself was not a musician. He did expect and receive the highest level of quality with it enduring regardless of personnel change within his term. The author also provides excellent expository insight into the hurdles faced by the group, including financial duress and the expected domestic racism. However the Jubilee Singers also encountered the issues of success such as loss of personal privacy and the occasional inflated ego. This is a story worth telling, one in an era so close after the end of slavery in which a group of African-Americans gained worldwide acclaim. What a miracle to be born into slavery then some years later to interact with such notables of the era as Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Queen Victoria, and DL Moody.

Because I feel that studying with it helped me do well on the test, I feel that I have to give this book a good rating. My master's program is Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in ESL. Some of the content was not addressed directly in program coursework.I am glad to have made the purchase and to have had access to it (I used the Kindle for PC version). I studied for a three-week period between semesters (this, and an older version of an ESL Praxis study guide that I found used on Amazon). The content felt so boring, and I so despise having to take standardized tests, that I couldn't bring myself to spend much time on it immediately before the test. I didn't practice the writing segments and am not sure how I did on those since the test score isn't broken down to give that information, but I think that having a firm grip on content will help with that aspect. It didn't seem like there were many more current study guides available, than this title. It is a decent review, however.

I really liked this study book a whole lot. It went more in depth than some others that I had read for this test. I scored well above what I needed on it because of this book. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Definitely helped me know what to study and how to prepare. Before I went in, I had no idea what to expect. This book was a great prep resource.

I passed this test on the first try and got a rather high score actually. As long as this book is used with intent, you should be fine.

This was an excellent study guide. It was easy to read and the online Praxis test was great as it showed me exactly what my weak areas were. Now I'm just waiting for the test results.

I used this to help me study, passed the test, and got a nice high score. Definitely recommend.

I passed the test, so I guess you could say it works. The condensed/main points section at the beginning of each section is great for really quick studying. The book gives you all the main pieces of information you need to know for the test.

I studied three or four times a week for an hour or two, while my baby was sleeping, and I passed the test. I really liked the simplicity of the study over each math concept, but when I went to take the test the questions were a lot more difficult. This book gives you a good review over concepts, just be ready to use those concepts in (how can I say it?) a multi-layer way. Over all please with my score!!

I've been a drummer on and off for the past 40 years - never professionally - with a long dry spell until last January when I purchased a new Roland V-Drum kit and hired a private instructor to get me started again. The instructor was amazed at the books I had used early on and throughout my life, some with hand written notes from one of my early instructors, Charles Perry, author of the Rockin Bass Drum. But I was missing a few books from my library that dealt specifically with 4-Way Independence. So, I purchased the mainstays including Gary Chester's New Breed II, Marco Minemann's Extreme Interdepence, and this book. I have to say that Dahlgren's 4-Way Coordination book is easy to work through. All exercises are written in either 2/4 or 4/4, and are easy to ready and quickly apply to the kit. I love this book so much that I may spend 30 minutes on it everyday. I enjoy the challenges it presents AND I see and hear the results in my playing. THIS IS A MUST HAVE BOOK for the intermediate and advanced player! To read more about my drumming experiences and practice routines, please visit my blog at adrummersblog.com.

Free open independence of limbs should be any drummer's goal. To be able to play any rhythm with any limb regardless of what the other 3 are doing. This book breaks you down from the ground up. Most drummers will immediately notice their left foot as the weakest link start to catch up to speed with the rest of their limbs with the initial melodic coordination exercises. This is not an easy book, you'll be humbled very quickly if you expect to blaze through this one. It's imperative to take your time on this stuff. You need to step up to this book with a zen-like patience and a child-like excitement to the challenges that await. One extremely important tip to getting through this book is to assign each hand and foot to a different drum. The obvious would be...right hand = floor tomleft hand = snareright foot = kickleft foot = hihat pedalThis is imperative because it allows you to memorize the pattern by ear once you've played it enough. Something that would be impossible to do effectively with both hands on the snare or each foot on a kick pedal. Good luck and be persistent. This book only works if you work on it. I personally don't do very well sight reading music. I learn best by ear, so I have transcribed pages into a midi sequencer and learned by ear with a good system used for tracking my progress with each exercise. I truly love this book. It's a monster.I recently decided to start taking lessons as a way to help me sight read through this book. My teacher told me most of his students didn't really enjoy it, as the musical application of the ideas are not spelled out for you. They simply wanted to move onto learning patterns that had an immediate and obvious musical application. As other's have said this book isn't designed to teach you new grooves and patterns that can be lifted directly from the book and used in an immediate musical context without using your imagination. These have more of a drill type feel to them. Which is to be expected. This book is designed to give you limb interdependence. It goes after one goal in an extremely solid and thorough way. It's up to you to translate that interdependence into musical ideas yourself. Every drummer knows what it feels like when they hit a snag with a pattern that requires slow practice to master. If you thrive on chasing that dragon, get this book. You will be a better drummer for it.

My drum instructor was really excited when I showed him this book and actually knew the authors personally. This book simplifies the complexity of coordination by leaving interpretation up to the student...ie it will say LF...RH...LH and allows you to pick whatever drum or simble you feel comfortable with. Before you know it a subconscious independcy develops allowing each limb to think for itself

If you are seeking help with limb independence on the drumset this is a must buy. It's the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that you are seeking. Truly it is. It's not hard to use at all. In fact, it's extremely simple exercises, but they will indeed do what they say.I just bought the book and I have only had it a few days. Yes, it's true that I can't speak from actual results yet, but just from starting in on these exercises I can see precisely how they are going to take me to full limb independence in baby-steps. All that's required now is for me to sit down and practice these though this book. I have no doubt at all that they will take me where I want to be in terms of limb independence. I can already feel it coming in the very first set of exercises.Just as a tip for anyone one who buys, or owns, this book. The actual instructions are very brief. There really isn't much to say. The exercises speak for themselves. However they do say to play 2 bars of rhythm and 2 bars of exercises. They don't go into detail about that. What I realized they mean is to play two bars of groove (pick a groove of your own choice), and then two bars of exercises, drop back into your groove, then play the next two-bar exercise, and so on. Wow! That really helps and instantly gives these exercises a musical feel. Also, some of the exercises are printed as eighth notes. You can put any kind of swing field on them you like. It's not about timing. All they are using the notes for is to convey which limb should play each note. So you can play these independence exercises to any rhythmic beat you so chose. It's not about rhythm, it's about limb independence. So it doesn't matter whether you're playing jazz, funk, rock, you name it. These exercises can be played with any musical feel you like. Just get a groove going and start playing these two-bar exercises, then two-bars of groove, and back and forth. You can't go wrong. You might even come up with some really cool beats of your own just from having gone through these independence exercises.I can't recommend the book highly enough. Like someone else said, it's worth 20 stars if limb independence is your goal. You'll feel it coming as soon as you start in on these. Not to imply that it will come easy. You may need to start out slow, but you'll quickly feel that you're on the right path.I'm certainly excited about this lesson book. Like some others have mentioned, it's quite unconventional in its approach, and as far as I can see this is the "secret method" I was seeking. The pot of Gold that I never believed existed.

The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl, by Timothy Egan

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Egan tells an extraordinary tale in this visceral account of how America's great, grassy plains turned to dust, and how the ferocious plains winds stirred up an endless series of "black blizzards" that were like a biblical plague: "Dust clouds boiled up, ten thousand feet or more in the sky, and rolled like moving mountains" in what became known as the Dust Bowl. But the plague was man-made, as Egan shows: the plains weren't suited to farming, and plowing up the grass to plant wheat, along with a confluence of economic disaster—the Depression—and natural disaster—eight years of drought—resulted in an ecological and human catastrophe that Egan details with stunning specificity. He grounds his tale in portraits of the people who settled the plains: hardy Americans and immigrants desperate for a piece of land to call their own and lured by the lies of promoters who said the ground was arable. Egan's interviews with survivors produce tales of courage and suffering: Hazel Lucas, for instance, dared to give birth in the midst of the blight only to see her baby die of "dust pneumonia" when her lungs clogged with the airborne dirt. With characters who seem to have sprung from a novel by Sinclair Lewis or Steinbeck, and Egan's powerful writing, this account will long remain in readers' minds. From The New Yorker

On April 14, 1935, the biggest dust storm on record descended over five states, from the Dakotas to Amarillo, Texas. People standing a few feet apart could not see each other; if they touched, they risked being knocked over by the static electricity that the dust created in the air. The Dust Bowl was the product of reckless, market-driven farming that had so abused the land that, when dry weather came, the wind lifted up millions of acres of topsoil and whipped it around in "black blizzards," which blew as far east as New York. This ecological disaster rapidly disfigured whole communities. Egan's portraits of the families who stayed behind are sobering and far less familiar than those of the "exodusters" who staggered out of the High Plains. He tells of towns depopulated to this day, a mother who watched her baby die of "dust pneumonia," and farmers who gathered tumbleweed as food for their cattle and, eventually, for their children. I was born in 1935 and lived in southern Kansas until 1955. I remember some of the dust storms as if it was yesterday. I recently read my mother's 1935 diary and she frequently mentioned the terrible dust storms. I was very young during the Great Depression, but I still remember Mills, which were ten to equal one penny. I was listening to the radio when Franklin D. Rosevelt announced the attack on Pearl Harbor and December 7th, 1941 as a day that will live in infamy. My grandparents lived on a farm in northern Oklahoma. To visit there was a trip into the past. They had no electricity, no running water, an out house, kerosene lanterns, kerosene stoves, and a real ice box. They are all gone now and I can no longer ask what the conditions were in their early years. This book helped me see into the past of my own relatives.

I don't normally pay much attention to the title of a book. The title's primary purpose to me is to catch my attention when I'm in a book store browsing. After it catches my eye I immediately resort to the GR scan feature to learn what GR members have to say about the book. In the final analysis what I remember about a book is what's behind the title. Frequently, when speaking about a book I've read with a friend I will be completely unable to recall the title. This book and its title are entirely different. I can't recall a more appropriately titled book than this one, "The Worst Hard Time".My parents were children of the of the Depression. During my childhood they told us stories of how that national tragedy affected their childhoods and that of their friends and neighbors. We all probably have read stories and seen photos of the Depression and many of us have read "The Grapes of Wrath" or seen the movie. This book is not about any of that. This book is not about the people that fled the Dust Bowl. This book is about the people that stayed and attempted to exist on next to nothing, literally. Pride and independence prevented them from seeking aid until things went beyond desperate, way beyond. What is also remarkable about this book is to read it now in a time when we live among people that for selfish and political reasons are adamant in their rejection of science and in climate change. The book makes clear that after the government finally addressed the crisis following FDR's election that the cause of the Dust Bowl was man and his ignorance and his greed. Sadly, the people that need to read this history never will as it fails to affirm what they wish to believe and profit by. What this book does affirm is the consequences of man's ignorance and greed when dealing with the forces of nature. To this day the area afflicted by these vices of man has not healed. The author's story spans primarily the '30's but he delivers a necessary background to set up his story and the lives of those he uses to illustrate the scope of the Dust Bowl tragedy. In his telling of this history he employs the lives of several local residents in and around the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles. The stories of these people really humanizes the narrative and magnifies its impact. While weather reports, crops statistics, land cultivation data etc are all helpful and put a scale on the disaster it's reading about the daily lives of people that lived through it that give this book its wow factor. The impact this disaster had on the health of the people living there was something that I never considered. I always thought the limit of the tragedy was in the fertility of the soil blowing away. I did not know that these winds were an almost daily occurrence and that breathable air was a precious commodity and "dust pneumonia" was a virulent killer. Who would ever think a person walking or working outside could be suddenly caught in one of these dust storms and suffocate to death. That the detrimental affect of the Dust Bowl on the health of residents was something that would have required a career of coal mining yet these folks were being afflicted within a few years. This is an extremely compelling history whose worth today is enormous and we should all learn about the Worst Hard Time. I highly recommend this book. (less)

This book is so amazingly timely, not just for the aspect of the man-made contributions to natural disaster happening at a time of economic hardship, but also for a lot of the political aspects of it, and of course for the human aspects. People don't change so much.I did watch the Dust Bowl miniseries first, and they do cover some of the same ground, though with different focuses, but I feel like you get more details from this book.To be fair, it is rough. There are a few main people that you follow and they are constantly defeated by the land, dying broke, or physically broken, and any chances for renewal and success have to wait for the next generation. Even as things get better, there are indications that we are on the same path, not just in other places, but even right there with the demands on the Oglalla. That's why it is so timely, and so important. Humans don't change much, and they will keep making the same mistakes over and over again unless information, and education, can change that.

An amazingly powerful book about the 1930s dust bowl, how we got it, and what was done about it (often, very little). In my opinion it excels over earlier works because it gives causes for the phenomenon that plagued the Central States for years over and above the usual "dry weather and strong winds." I won't deny the book has its more pedantic aspects when it gets into climatology and such, but otherwise it's so good I would recommend it for high-school history courses -- the advanced ones, anyway. The paperback has been sharply reduced in price at Amazon and other vendors.

As someone who's lived on the East Coast my whole life, a continuous forest with ideal farmland, I took for granted the hardship that settlers faced as they moved out West and decided to settle. However, it was also baffling how incompetent the government was in not only supporting the destruction of natural habitats without repercussions, but also the sheer idiocy they fell back in in dealing with the situation.Timothy Egan's dive into the Great Dust Bowl is superb. His precise, narrative writing does much to draw the reader in and make its real-life characters easier to relate to. He gives personalities to these people who refused to bow down to nature and for that they were punished, in a way. But punished not only by the land, but also by their own government. Egan details the slow spiral of the Great Plains from lush prairie land to desiccated, desolate hardpan without a hint of green. He compliments the personal narratives of these farmers with in-depth historical analysis of the towns and the governments working behind the scenes, while also providing a sort of biological analysis of the ecosystem and how it rapidly fell apart.

bad handling of it. The writing is very poor. The stories are told, but often incompletely. Important details are left out such as a woman's racial heritage or where she is from. (I believe) for the sake of brevity, whole sections of a persons life, important things such as a Muslim marriage, are glossed over. The women's stories are fragmented and do them a great disservice.

I can't recommend a better book about Muslim women in America. This is the best by far and I went back to read it at my library multiple times. With all the controversy surrounding Islam, reading the stories of women entering Islam is like breathing fresh air on a Saturday morning. The most powerful chapter to me was ch22 about a blonde woman who frequented clubs where she danced and showed off her outfits and was always buying the latest cosmetics. After 1 trip to a local mosque, she slowly went in the direction of the truth. After learning more about Islam, she changed her name to Fatima and became a Muslim and never missed a daily prayer since. She became such a devout Muslim; she not only covered her hair but wanted to cover her face in public. I thought about how a woman could be dancing in a club one day and wanting to cover up her face the next. What I came up with is that people want to be the best at what they do. In the American culture, women strive to be the Top model or the American idol and they generally want to look their best. In Islam, women strive to please God and in the process, try to be modest and some women and men (the Taliban) can go overboard trying to do that. We all need a balance between material and spiritual life, between reason and soul, between this world and the next and between indulgence and abstinence. The Prophet said that we should seek the "Middle Path" and never stray into extremism. What Islam does better than any other religion in the world is give guidance to human beings. The first chapter in the Quran says, "Guide us to the straight path." There are paths we can take in life and some of those paths can lead us to happiness or destruction. A lady in the book said she left Islam and became a Christian. From far away, it would appear as if Islam was the problem in her life. If we take a closer look at her relationship with her Muslim husband, who beat her and abused her and said he was going to marry another woman because his religion allowed him to do so. The book also mentioned that he drunk alcohol. I am sure any woman would be angry with a husband like this, whether he was a Muslim or not. His religion had nothing to do with his actions as he wasn't following the teachings of Islam in the first place. He was not on the "straight path" and he will be punished on the Day of Judgment because God is just. This woman, like many other people, makes the assumption that Islam is no good from one example or from one type of person. Only those who have deep knowledge of Islam will appreciate what it brings to humanity.

I do not believe this book tells the whole story. Sure there are women who wear this veil out of faith and there are those who wear it out of submission. However, the problem with the veil whether worn in faith or submission is that it hides the so called moderate muslim woman which seems quite ironic and more in keeping with a fundamentalism belief and that very nonassimilation draws a line in the dirt that is at odds with western society. It is a separatist symbol towards the western world and consequently arguments of peaceful muslims seem contrived and deliberately misleading concerning tolerance. I find this garment is not only an insult to the west that has opened its doors indeed with tolerance in general to muslim immigrants but also a plain security threat in the daily course of events such as in banks and airports where seeing the individual is the norm and a matter of course concerning validation of identity. It represents an attitude of divisiveness and certainly in the community it is not inviting to social functions or those that serve to bridge gaps of knowledge and understanding between different cultures. As a health care worker we face special limitations for these burka women that I believe are unfair and difficult to adhere to such as in providing emergency care. I believe exposing domestic violence and problems planning prayer sessions are informative but it should be no surprise as every culture has had problems with domestic violence and certainly it could be said that other cultures have had problems with planning to accomodate islamic people and their many needs. Certainly some of the women subscribing to this cloak of misery is a surprise knowing that in america women have fought for freedom of rights but that only shows how far these women are from believing in that concept. I find that islam in general is very intolerant to sharing of culture in american and live and let live policy so to speak when it comes to other culture and that this cloak this burka is merely a way to hide their phobia concerning american. While american excesses may be true america is the country that allows them to come here because we believe in multiculturalism and freedoms unheard of in islamic countries. The veil to me whether worn by a faithful follower or by a submissive follower still represents the oppression of women in america and is in keeping with islamic policies of divisiveness and supremacism!

The author does an excellent job of telling the stories of Muslim women in the US, who are very diverse. Ms. Gehrke-White introduces the reader to the lives of the New Traditionalists, The Blenders, The Converts, The Persecuted, and the Changers. In the US, the Muslimah has, as the author said, an "extraordinary" life, complete with choices, unfortunately unlike some of her counterparts abroad. The book is a celebration of Muslimah diversity. The Muslim women are speaking from their own voices. These are their stories. Through the interviews, Ms. Gehrke-White gained access to the lives of Muslim women like few non-Muslim authors have. As you read this book, you will throw away all your pre-conceptions and stereotypes of Muslim women.

The book is excellent. It explains our energy past to elucidate our energy present and future. And it’s quite well written. However, don’t buy this or any other book with graphs, photos, or illustrations on the Kindle app. This book has many such features which I’m sure would aid in comprehending the material, if only they were rendered at a size larger than my little fingernail. As it stands, it is impossible to even see what most of the diagrams and photos are meant to convey. And yes, I tried to no avail to enlarge them.Amazon really needs to fix this. For now, though, I’d advise folks to avoid trying to read even marginally technical books on the Kindle app.

I read this book based upon a recommendation in the Wall Street Journal and was not disappointed. The author covers the evolution from wood to coal to steam to electricity to nuclear and does a pretty good job of looking at the upsides and downsides of each. Each energy source has done some harm but lots of good. We need to keep evolving to make the world a better place. We’ve done it before.

Excellent book. I enjoy the way Rhodes brings historical characters to life. I do recommend it. I have two issues, both having to do with the Kindle version. First, the illustrations are hard enough to view when you CAN expand them. I'd say half the illustrations in this book could not be expanded so were essentially worthless little blobs on my screen. Second, I was immersed in reading with about 4 hrs and 45% remaining to read when the narrative suddenly ended. Huh? Turns out that last 45% is acknowledgments, bibliography, notes and index. Kudos to Rhodes for being so thorough but I was pretty let down by my perceived loss of material. I wasn't really interested in spending 4hrs perusing the extras. I think this Kindle quirk needs to change.

This is a great walk through the evolution of energy and a view of what is to come. Even if you think you know everything about how we got to where we are and the path forward, you will be surprised at how the author ties it all together. this book is a well balanced view of what we face and offers some thoughts on the path forward. It does a very good job in the discussion of today's energy picture to bring out the hidden biases that have been shaping the public discussion. There were some surprises in that section for me.

Richard Rhodes is well known for careful research and clear writing in his several non-fiction books. This book is no exception. What makes it particularly interesting is his customary and illuminating use of narratives about individuals to illustrate the larger historical movements that he describes. Happily, the book is well documented so that the reader may follow up on details without excess searching for references. The topic is timely, and the book is valuable.

If you ever wondered how it is that you turn on a switch an electricity flows into your home, or how it evolved that we heat our homes, power our factories or drive our cars this is a great read. The author does an excellent job of explaining the evolution of energy and power from pre-industrial revolution England, through the industrial revolution to the industrial revolution in America (eg manufacturing steel and aluminum, generating and transmission of electricity to gasoline as we know it today).

Free flowing and highly readable, indeed engrossing with many fascinating vignettes about historical events that shaped energy markets. And I was pleasantly surprised this was not an ideological treatise about fossil fuels and climate change, in fact reading between the lines it seemed to me that because of their inability to be scaled without huge subsidies the author is highly skeptical about renewable sources like wind and solar, waxing instead about the lost promise of nuclear, lost because in a democracy irrational fears (in this case about radioactivity) become accepted in to the public discourse as hard fact. He probably needed to be circumspect about his skepticism of wind and solar for fear of being skewered alive on the altar of political correctness by the "climate scientist" cabal, always fearful of some counterargument to the Faith jeopardizing their research grants.....

This is a fascinating, well documented history of energy and its evolution. The author is absolutely brilliant and explains not only the history but explanations of how things work and the inventors and personalities behind them. Some parts are somewhat technical, but you can gloss over them.
