About the Author
Timothy Paul Jones (Ed.D.) is professor in the School of Leadership and Church Ministry at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Formerly senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Rolling Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In addition to bachelor's and master's degrees in biblical literature and pastoral ministry, Timothy earned a doctorate in educational leadership from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He received the Baker Book House Award for excellence in theological scholarship, as well as the North American Professors of Christian Education Scholastic Recognition Award for his doctoral work in the field of spiritual formation.

We used "Christian History Made Easy" in our small group from church and had edifying discussions each week. We especially loved how the author emphasized humility as we studied some of the foibles of our spiritual forebears--realizing that we can't see our own blindspots. Our group also appreciated how the author made his wise choices of what to include--such the important contributions of women (often under-represented in re-telling of Christian history). There are so many things that could be discussed (and so little space to provide information!), but we felt that Jones picked the right things to expand upon.We held our last meeting tonight and all agreed that we understand better who we are from where we have come because we read this book together. Recommended.
In high school I hated history - facts and dates.. In college it was better to the point where I took some graduate level courses. What makes history enjoyable for me is when the author gets into the people and the background to the point where you can understand the personalities and the pressures and the context. You can put your self into it and have a sense of what it was really like. So honestly, when this book was assigned reading for one of the groups at my church, I was not looking forward to it because I could not see how it could possibly cover the whole of Christian history without being more than another text full of events and dates. However, it turned out to be better than pretty good. The author did a good job of weaving humor into the events. Also he did a good job of explaining this issues (and deadly conflicts) that Christians still wrestle with today. Why can't Protestants and Catholics agree? Is Christ God or man or equally both? I am the point now where I look forward to reading it. It is not going to take the place of serious history taught at a seminary, but it is great for your average church layman who wants to get a better perspective on the broad sweep of Christian history.
This is a very good introductory book on Christian history. It provides a lot of information considering it is trying to cover 2000+ years of history in 12 chapters. It provides some interesting details and history on events and people that shaped Christianity, for good and bad. You can then do further research on those topics that interest you. Can be used as a companion to the 12 week video course of the same name. It provides much more detail in a chapter than can be covered in a 20-30 minute video session. The chapters do not exactly cover the same time period as each video session, but match well enough. I would recommend this to anyone that would like to understand early church development/history.
I was searching for a book about Christianity beginning with the church after Christ and the spiritually guided apostles were all gone. This book is concise, well written and extremely informative. I've yet to find a better one with so much information in a book of less than 200 pages. I very highly recommend. At first I was worried that the print size might be a challenge to read but it turned out to be very comfortable. However If it were printed in a book with a larger font I'd definitely buy it. I will definitely be reading this book again soon.
This book is really part of a DVD Bible Study series which supplements a DVD and workbook. So, the book by itself doesn't cover all the matierial presented in the course. It is a concise survey of Christian History from the Protestant point of view, honestly presented without prejudice to the Catholic hertiage of the Church. Dr. Jones is very familiar with his material and so able to reduce it down to a very basic level. Even still, It is still a lot of material for those unfamiliar with the History of Christianity but after all, he is covering 2000 years of history in 12 lessons.
This is a book with lots of good information presented in direct, humorous, easy to understand language. I was hoping that someone on here could give me some help. I would like to know the authors source of Joan of Arc's last name. I have the Kindle version. On location 1915 the book says in referring to Joan of Arc, "Her victories formed an arc across France. So she became known as Joan of Arc." This book, "Christian History Made Easy" is the only place I have ever read that this is how she got her name. Joan chose to be called Joan the Maid or "Jehanne la Pucelle." However, her fathers name was Jacques d'Arc. According to one source Joan herself testified at her trial that: "My father was called Jacques d'Arc and mother Isabelle." During her life and during her trial she was never called Joan of Arc. But enough of my going on. Can anyone enlighten me as to the authors source of information about Joan of Arc? Once again, I think this is a good book and fun to read with great information.[...][...][...][...]
Excellent book. We are using it in conjunction with a class at church, there is so much information which I would not have time to research myself, but the author has done it for me! Interesting, spans the years from Christ right to present day, with much salient historicalInformation. I have learned much about the church's history and have a far better ideas why we have so many branches to the Protestsnt church. Much explained about the rationale behind the crusades and other parts of history which are hard to understand.
Very easy to read with a lot of information, just like the title says. I've read it all the way through and have gone back for reference a few times since. I recommend this for people like me who want a quick history of the Christian religion that won't weigh you down with a lot of blah, blah. This is a good beginner book and it may even create interest to dig deeper into a more through examination of the history of Christianity.
